FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE• Mon, Apr 18, 2011
Turkish Cypriots demand the conduction of a population census under the observation of the UN, Turkish Cypriot politician Izzet Izcan has said, warning that the Turkish settlers threaten the continuation of the existence of Turkish Cypriots in Cyprus.
Izcan, General Secretary of the Turkish Cypriot United Cyprus Party (BKP), held a meeting Sunday in his party’s offices, in the occupied areas, with a delegation of the AKEL left-wing ruling party, under General Secretary Andros Kyprianou, with whom they discussed the Cyprus issue and the ongoing UN – led Cyprus negotiations.
In his statements, Kyprianou referred to the Cyprus negotiations, saying that progress made so far is not very encouraging for the future of the negotiations.
“This is due to the fact that Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu is presenting views and ideas at the negotiations which are outside the agreed framework” he said.
He expressed the view that unless the two communities join their pro peace forces, it will be impossible to have an agreement and a solution of the problem.
Kyprianou said that the demonstrations staged by the Turkish Cypriots are encouraging and added that they help the moral of the people that a solution can be reached.
The AKEL General Secretary said that his party’s delegation would later on visit the occupied villages of Kormakitis and Karpasha to discuss with the enclaved people about their concerns and issues related to their day to day life.
In his statements, Izcan said that the Turkish Cypriot community is facing a lot of economic and political difficulties, adding that demonstrations in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus will continue.
Regarding Turkey’s policy to illegally bring to the occupied areas Turkish settlers, Izcan warned that the “Turkish Cypriot community came to a point of being extinct, being wiped out”.
He said that the Turkish Cypriot community demands a population census which will be observed by the international community, the UN. Turkish Cypriots, he went on to note, demand the termination of the flow of Turkish settlers, as well as the termination of Turkey’s attempts to change the demographic structure. “It came to a point of an unacceptable level” he warned.
He also said that Turkey does not really support the solution of the problem in Cyprus.
“They pretend that they support a solution but the demands on the table are not in line with the UN resolutions or with the agreement between Christofias and Talat. The proposals seem to be con-federal rather than federal and that cannot be accepted” he said.
Telling that BKP and AKEL are doing everything possible to reunite Cyprus, he said that the Cyprus talks are going on but current developments are not very positive.
He added that BKP and Turkish Cypriots support a federal solution which will be based on UN resolutions and want the ongoing negotiations to produce positive results.
