Cyprus is not Turkish, it's Cypriot (it being called Cyprus probably should have given that one away). Islam as practised many years ago recognised Christiand and Jews as "people of the book", who were tollerated and indeed had freedom of worship: now Islam has become repressive.

Why are so many Moslem leaders now encouraging intollerance? Is because they now know that there are alternatives to their version of truth, where heresy will under-mine their power base, as once someone accepts an alternative view of God/Allah and how to find him/her/it that person may then seek to challange the right to rule of those who claim they are ruling in God's name?

If you actually want an answer to that, it is this:

most muslim counties are 300 years behind the west economically and in terms of social development and evolution of culture; so to understand the somewhat "questionalable" application of cultural laws and practices then you must look at the west 300 years ago,

The Arab countries are included in this because although they are wealthy their wealth is built on an exclusively primary economy.

Turkey although hated on here is ahead of most muslim countries as the the economy is secondary in the main, and the culture secular.

as for the application of cultural values..... what we see in the west may be fair (fairer) in terms of individual rights, but really not in term of foreign policy.
