Hopes climb on gas deal
Meetings between the government and Noble Energy representatives yesterday ended on a high note with talk of getting results on drilling for natural gas by the end of the year.
President Demetris Christofias yesterday received at the Presidential Palace a delegation from the Texas-based company, headed by its Vice-President Rodney Cook. Earlier in the day the American delegation met with Commerce Minister Antonis Paschalides and others.
Noble has a concession to explore for hydrocarbons in an offshore field south-east of Cyprus, known as Block 12.
Speaking after the meeting with Christofias, Cook said his team had a round of “great meetings” in Cyprus, culminating in an “excellent meeting” with the president.
“We have informed him of the upcoming well to be drilled with a target date of no later than the end of this year... The president pledged his support as well as that of the minister and his group and we look forward to that.
“We have also discussed beyond the drilling of the well how we would monetise gas upon discovery and cooperation with that. As we move forward we would hope to have results of the first well by the end of this year,” said Cook.
