However if one is casting aside emotions should one not be casting aside attachments even to material possesions, save on the basis of utility for one's needs to live?

I must admit I do not think a world peopled by Spock like beings would be a pleasant place.

A realist is one who recognizes that normal human beings have emotions. Expecting from humans not to have emotions is not realistic. Materialism is also something related to emotions.
