The TRNC to open up Maras.

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

O.K. let's cool down a bit....

'Adabizim' I am not denying that what some maniacs did to the Turkish Cypriots was wrong either-I have seen Tony Angastiniotis film about what happened in Mesaoria etc. and fully support him-likewise Sevgul Uludags efforts to help families on both sides but two wrongs never made a right! In this particular case we were supposed to be discussing what happened to Varosha and distorting the facts by trying to say it was captured in battle is simply not true!
In fact,if the Turkish Army had any sense they would have kept the place in reasonable condition, rather than destroying it as they have done-it would not have been that difficult or expensive to keep the roads and pavements clear and maintained the gardens and parks etc, just as they have done in the area which they use as an army holiday centre around Kennedy Avenue? It would have given the conscripts something useful to do with their time there for one thing.........
Having seen how the place has become I just cannot help feeling that it was a deliberate act of psychological warfare against the G.C's,knowing very well that they can see it in the distance from the south and even walk right up to the edge of the place since 2003.....
Or is there some other logical explanation???

So you would support it being reopened to its original inhabitants under the TRNC?

Sounds like you do not want to return to Maras, given the opportunity so dont go around saying we wont allow you back.

i think people would like to return but the least acceptable situation would be either under a UN or EU ADMINISTRATION OF VAROSIA NOT UNDER Turkish administrtation.

Not a feasible suggestion.....

Postby cymart » Sat Apr 09, 2011 10:46 pm

The way the situation is now, most Greek-Cypriots would not feel secure returning under Turkish Cypriot control-what guarantees would they have to make the enormous investment required to rebuild the town etc?
But a decent opening gesture would be to at least allow the Greek-Cypriots to visit their properties while it is still under T.C. control so they can see for themselves what the situation is there and start making plans whether they want to come back or not once a solution is found.Of course this is a reasonable idea which would benefit everyone, but the main obstacle is the Turkish Army being in control of it and their ridiculous obsession with not allowing anyone else access! If they had any sense they could have arranged tours of what would be a unique attraction in Europe for many people and made some money which could have been used for maintenance etc....

You cannot make it a tourist attraction as it is a military zone. Opening to development would be a very big step on behalf of the TCs and allowing those GCs to return if they so wished would be an even bigger step. But if the majority of properties were nto claimed then they would be used by the TRNC.
