ISTANBUL – Anatolia News Agency
The number of Turkish Cypriots wishing to break away from Turkey is very few, İrsen Küçük, prime minister of Northern Cyprus, said Sunday.
Speaking to reporters in a breakfast in Istanbul, Küçük said, "There will be a minority in every society. However, 99 percent of all Turkish Cypriots are loyal to the motherland, Turkey."
“The will of a minority of Turkish Cypriots to break away from Turkey should not be paid much attention to. Our hearts beat differently for our motherland and Ankara.”
“We experience certain difficulty as a country not recognized by the world, except by Turkey. Our motherland helps us feel less difficulty through assistance, he said, adding, “We are in the process of establishing Turkish Cypriot Airlines.”
“We were pleased to see Turkey grow by 9 percent in 2010 and the Turkish per capita income reach over $10,000,” Küçük said.
“We look at the developments in Turkey as examples and work accordingly. Our economy shrank by 6 percent in 2009 but grew by 4 percent in 2010. With Turkey's support, we expect the northern Cyprus tourism sector to grow by 70 percent in 2011. In 2012, our goal is to balance the northern Cyprus budget for the first time in the history of our republic.”
