The mess in Cyprus was created by the foreign invaders: The British and the Turks.
The Cypriot people asked for nothing more than what was their right. If the foreign imperialists could not respect the rights of the Cypriots, the blame obviously lies with the imperialists, and not with the Cypriots for daring asking for their rights.
That is like saying that we should blame the murder of Martin Luther King on Luther King himself, because he dared to ask for what was right for his people to which some criminals reacted by killing him. If Luther King just shut up and accepted his rights to be violated then he could have lived and died of old age.
Oppressed people revolt often seeking their freedom. Some times the revolt is successful, very often it is not. The oppressors punish the people, trying to "give them a lesson" that revolting and seeking their rights can only lead to their punishment, in an effort to prevent the oppressed from revolting again. This is the "lesson" that foreign imperialists like "supporttheunderdog" are trying to teach us. Some people with slave mentality "learn" this lesson (e.g. Bananiot). The rest of us, those with dignity and self-respect, will keep fighting until our island is liberated. The Imperialists can enslave our lands, but they can not enslave our minds and souls.
We know what is best for us, our children and our island, and we are striving for what is best for us. On the contrary what the foreign imperialists care about is how to serve their own interests on our expense. This is why imperialists such as "supporttheunderdog" not only say their "humble opinion", but they are held bend to impose their terms on Cyprus and show no kind of respect to what we want for our own island.
We are Greek and for us Athens is what London is for the people in Liverpool, nor foreign at all. Being part of Greece has absolutely nothing to do with being part of the British empire because (1) We are Greek, not British (2) Being part of a Greek state was our choice, not something imposed on us, (3) We would be equal Greek citizens, not colonial subjects.
Sure, having a small country can have positive aspects, look at countries such as Monaco, or Luxembourg, far better than a city like Liverpool. But it can also have negative aspects, the most obvious one that a small country is weak and not able to defend itself, a major negative aspect in a region such as ours.
The British and the Turks NEVER wanted a truly independent Cyprus. What they wanted was simply to isolate Cyprus from the rest of the Greek nation, to make it easier for themselves to continue to oppress and abuse our island.
I would rather have what they have in Crete or Rhodes, rather than the pseudo independence imposed on us by the imperialists which actually leaves our island under the control of the British and the Turks.
