if the usa had over 20,000 sorties and 2 jets downed thats an unbelievable advantage in war and air superiority....can cyprus have such an advantage over turkey?

If Iraq was able to down that many allied jets using Silkworm missiles, then there’s not a doubt in my mind that the CNG would decimate the TAF or much of it anyway!

Here’s what you’re comparing…

Scenario 1. The best surveillance, support, and greatest number of coordinated jets VERSUS Iraq’s predominantly Silkworm missiles and AAA!

With

Scenario 2. 3rd rate surveillance, support, and smaller number of (American-export) jets piloted by Turks VERSUS the CNG’s wide range and state of the art S2A defenses.

Given the defensive choice I’d much rather be in the second group!

Why, are you planning to cross dress for us?

For your info, in 1974 the ragtag Cypriot defense shot down 15 Turkish jets (mostly Super Sabres) with AAA!!!!

According to who?

In any case, time has moved on and although you guys are still rag-tag, the TAF has learnt a lot in NATO.

According to who?

It’s common knowledge among our people who shot them down (I (10 year old) climbed on the ruins of one shot down east of Tymbou), but if you need official verification here it is…

Immediately after the Turkish invasion the United States Senate sent a team of investigators to Cyprus to write up a report on the consequences of the invasion which included a section titled “COSTS OF THE INVASION TO TURKEY”. An interesting portion of that section follows…

"Nearly 10% of Turkey's military force is now stationed on Cyprus, and there have been heavy logistical and support requirements. Civilian "technicians" and others have also gone to the island. Moreover, there were considerable losses during the invasion. According to responsible military sources in the field, the performance of Turkey's armed forces during the first phase of the invasion was very poor. Although Turkey apparently employed a basic plan its general staff had drafted and perfected over a period of several years, military observers say there was poor operational planning, inadequate communications, and a near total failure of joint operations among Turkish air, sea, and ground forces.

As a result, through tactical errors Turkey lost an estimated 15 aircraft during the invasion. It sank one of its own destroyers. Casualties were considered light, but included some 300 men killed and another 500 wounded. Had there been any substantial Greek Cypriot forces and tanks in the northern part of the island, casualties undoubtedly would have been considerably higher. One military observer suggested, for example, that because the Turkish airborne assault came at too high an altitude, a better organized and equipped Greek Cypriot army could have easily eliminated an entire Turkish airborne regiment swinging helplessly in the air.”

It’s pretty daft to brag about a country’s military who made complete fools of themselves and only “succeeded” because of sheer overwhelming numbers like 200:1!

You need to raise your standards pretty badly!

Btw, that’s the “secret” of the Greek Cypriot… he pretends to be civilized, cultured, a softy, business oriented, and so forth, but in reality when its time to take up arms he’ll fuck you ten times and you’ll be “looking for your mistake with a tea spoon” as we say in Cyprus! Image
