UN envoy says Cyprus peace talks failure would cost tens of billions of euros

NICOSIA, Cyprus — A United Nations envoy has warned that failure in long-running talks to reunify divided Cyprus would saddle both sides with a massive wave of property claims for “tens of billions of euros.”

Alexander Downer told The Associated Press in an interview Thursday that continued stalemate would spur compensation litigation for property lost since the island’s division along ethnic lines in 1974.

The latest round of reunification talks is now in its third year. They have produced only limited progress.

oh dear. i hope turkey can afford it.

A timely reminder seeing as most of that property belongs to G/Cs...

...cough, cough, cough.

indeed, grecophones and turcophones can return as communities, at least for some, with many enclaves spotting the island as it is drawn today. if the repopulation of the island allowed for National Assemblies, powers as equals, geographically, they will serve an electorate as a Majority first, but they will benefit from providing this representation island wide, respecting and recognising the special needs of the Minorities that live amongst them would be of reciprocal benefit.

Bicommunal is a Unitary State with it's Government, when not as Individuals, but as well, as Persons too, citizens can gather for their representation as People.

a census, with the right questions, can demonstrate how much Turkey's occupation has changed the island's demography. perhaps if the property issue was linked to this census, many relevant facts will be observed. if eroglu cannot demonstrate the population he represents as a Cypriot, like others before him, his credibility will be fowled and his numbers ignored; these talks will fail. it may be that the momentum swings against the Kemalists, the "Greeks" have been kicked around since Annan, yet this may change.

The Turks will have to pay to us at least 5 times more than what we will have to pay to the TCs. Thats a good deal for us. With the Annan plan we would have to compensate everybody ourselves and Turkey would not pay one euro! So fuck their "solutions". Let the litigations star! :D

Thinking about it with the Annan plan we would also have to pay for the Settlers and for the useless TC "public sector". Let Turkey pay for her settlers, let Turkey pay for the useless TC "public sector", let Turkey pay for the litigation from refugees. And meanwhile no more EU chapters will open for Turkey either. I think what Downer is trying to solve is not the Cyprus Problem but Turkey's Problem

Turkey will not pay anything because Mr Downer and the UN are not holding Turkey accountable to her crimes. I wonder if Mr Downer would like the same thing to happen to Australia. Indonesia invades we loose our homes and then do nothing?
