If your father or grandfather is/was cypriot, but you have lived outside cyprus all your life, and you want to come to cyprus to live and work, you have to do national service. 6 months if you're under the age of 26, 3 months after that.

His father is a Cypriot born in UK. Grandfather born in CY.
So the fact that his father was 'born' elsewhere is the deciding factor?

I have both a cypriot name and surname. I was born in england, so was my father but his father was born in Cyprus before 1960 and has lived in England for sixty years. My mother is cypriot.

There's a qualifying date, and it's sometime in 1955. If your grandfather left CY before that date, he is not classed as being a CY Citizen, under an article in the laws of the Republic.

The law needs testing cos it's ambiguous with references to "Cypriot" Ancestry, whether your father is "Cypriot", whether your Grandfather is "Cypriot", in a way which mixes matters of genetics and legal citizenship.
