The GC press is buzzing today with revelations that the late Greek press mogul Christos Lambrakis had a hand in planning the Cyprus coup in 1974.
According to evidence presented to the Parliamentary committe looking into the Cyprus file, evidence which originated from Makarios' personal assistant Vovidis, Lambrakis invited junta strongman Ioannides, Sampson and EOKA B' financier Potamianos (a shipowner), to his country home in Poros island a few days before the coup.
According to MP Koulias, who presented the documentary evidence, the subject of the meeting was the decision to go ahead with the coup to topple Makarios.
Most interesting of all is the conclusion reached by the Committe that the coup and invasion were jointly agreed by the junta in Greece and Turkey.
Amazing that no other forumer thought it fit to post this information here today.
For the TC forumers who do not know the ins and outs of Greek politics and media, Christos Lambrakis was the major media man, something like the Murdoch of Greece, in the post war ear till his death a few years ago. He has been often described as a "king maker" and "power broker". Considering his outward left wing posture this information brings some thriller dimensions to the story.
Anyone have more on this?
