Should the West intervene in Libya ?

Postby NEVERSAYNEVER » Fri Mar 18, 2011 10:42 am

The UN has passed a resolution approving all necessary measures to impose a no-fly zone on Libya which gives the go ahead for the West to intervene militarily .
Wrong in my opinion , the West is already involved in troublesome and expensive actions elsewhere . Gaddafi as well as his son are not "normal" people , they will see the nation destroyed with thousands dead rather than give up. Collectively these two are a menace to the free world but they are the "devil you know" , and I have reservations as to who would replace the madman Gaddafi.

The Arab states are in a turmoil , they should be left to their own devices , let them sort it out , I will be damned if I would accept my son fighting for the people of Libya , its their battle not ours .
The West has every right to intervene if its own security is threatened , I do not see the Libyan revolution as a thread to the West.

The problem is that the whole thing will then take on a neo-imperialist dimension.

I have a certain emotional connection with what is going on because I spent four weeks as a trainer at an oil facility in the Libyan desert working with Libyan youths. Ever since , I have always felt that these noble people deserved better and hoped one day to see them rise up and dispose of this madman by themselves, like the Romanian people did to Ceausescu. I am also convinced that if Gaddafi can be toppled by his own people, then the regimes in the Arab Gulf, the last bastion of feudalism in the world, will eventually have to reform or disappear, and the world will then be a far better place. I am just worried that if outside powers start interfering and try to exploit events for their own benefit, things will start moving in a different direction, and we will end up with a new set of dictatorships, with the strings held by the imperialists. We live in interesting times. All power to the Arab people!

The Arab world will not look kindly on any military action by the West in Libya. Irrefutable fact .
Consequences of any military action would be detrimental and NOT beneficial to the interests of the West. Libya is not a thread to the West , after all it was only a few years back that Gaddafi was welcomed and "embraced " by the West as a direct result of his abandonment of nuclear ambitions.
He still has the support of thousands of Libyans who see him as their hero .
The West will regret any action taken in haste. Its no wonder Russia as well as China expressed reservations.

I gained a very different impression from coming into contact with ordinary Libyans, that is all I can say.

The vast majority no doubt want a change , but thousands who are benefiting by the regime want him to stay , this is supported by Al Jazeera reporting direct from Libya. The likely outcome if the West stays out is that Gaddafi and his army will crush the rebellion , so far we have not witnessed any action by the army to indicate that it will support the rebellion , on the contrary the army so far has fully supported Gaddafi .

It's a crime against humanity to hold onto power for four decades!

I’d like to see UN GA & SC resolutions banning/condemning anyone for remaining in power for longer than say 15 years, regardless of the political setup. This would go a long way to fighting authoritarian despotic ruler-ship worldwide.
