Greek proposal on Turkish Cyprus population mars negotiations

The issue came up during ongoing UN-led reunification talks between Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Derviş Eroğlu, the Milliyet daily reported.

Greek Cypriot leader Dimitris Christofias has argued that the percentage of the Turkish population in any future united Cypriot state should not be higher than one-fourth of the entire population and should always remain at that percentage, a Turkish daily reported on Monday.

The issue came up during ongoing UN-led reunification talks between Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Derviş Eroğlu, the Milliyet daily reported, underlining that the Turkish side reacted angrily to the proposal. Christofias also insisted that a census should be conducted in the north of the island.

Labeling Christofias' proposal as "against human rights," the Turkish delegation pointed to a higher fertility rate among the Turkish population. "How will this happen? Maybe, years after the agreement, the Turkish people's population will be two-fourths of the entire population," the Turkish delegation was quoted as saying by Milliyet. Still, Christofias, in response, insisted that the percentage should always be one-fourth.

The main sticking point on the issue of citizenship during negotiations is the status of recent Turkish settlers from Turkey in a future united Cyprus. Suggesting that Christofias had earlier accepted the citizenship of 50,000 Turkish settlers in the new state, Milliyet noted that the Greek Cypriot leader has recently backed down from this idea.

I think after 37 years we don't even consider the negotiations serious.

In regards to your question on the topic. Yes.

It seems like a pretty ridiculous proposal in the first place. What is its purpose, and how can the population be regulated?

Here's a better proposal to regulate the population:

The TCs know first hand what is like to suffer from human rights abuse...That is why you have more TCs with empathy for the GCs than the other way around...

We are truly touched by the empathy you have shown us. Your obscenity on the mountain is a constant reminder of your empathy while your support for partition and the colonizing policies of the Turkish army in the north has reached out and touched all our hearts.

Your empathy extends to stealing our land, squatting in our houses and threatening to shoot us if we return while consistently arguing that we have no rights to our homes and territory because the Turkish army seized it in a "peace operation". This is all deeply moving.

Your empathy goes as far as to blame us for provoking the Turkish army to invade and ethnically cleanse us from our land. While your empathy has done wonders for preserving our cultural heritage in the north.

Where would be today without all all your kindness and understanding? How will we ever repay you for all this empathy you have showered upon us over the years?

BirKibrisli...If you know, first hand, what it's like to suffer from human rights abuse, then you should complain to the ECHR about what the mainland Turks have done to you. Although, you'll get no sympathy because you (island Turks), wanted them. I assume that's what you mean because Greek Cypriots were your neighbours and friends.

Also, I would have thought it was more to do with guilt than empathy of why you 'empathise' with Greek Cypriots over human rights. The atrocities committed by island Turks and mainland Turks alike on the Greek Cypriots was disgusting and not even mangy dogs deserved to be treated how you (Turks as a whole), treated us.

Human Rights - you can't even spell it!
