Don't be such an idiot. The occupation regime has already apologised to the MEPs for this whole shameful episode. It seems that you are the only person left who thinks there was a need to arrest these people. Even the occupation authorities know when they have a public relations disaster on their hands. But not you apparently. You're in a hole and you just keep digging.

The issue is not that these officials strayed into a "forbidden zone" but that the Turkish army is mindlessly and illegally occupying the town of Varosha and preventing its former inhabitants from returning to their homes and properties. You clearly think this is a rational and legal thing to be doing. But then you are a blind advocate of the illegal and the stupid so I'm not surprised.

Where did I say there was a need to arrest these people?
Stop putting words in my mouth...I think you are mindlessly and illegally occupaying the RoC government benches, but you think that is a rational and legal thing to be doing... We are even... We are just looking at it from different angles...

The MEPs that were held against their will and interrogated by the Turkish Army of Occupation were all members of the Petitions Committee of the European Parliament. A standing committee of the European Parliament elected from and by Euro MEPs.

The Petitions Committee receives a large number of petitions from EU Citizens and part of their remit is to investigate matters raised by petitioners, and to report their findings to the European Parliament and to take up the matters raised with the European Commission if necessary on the behalf of petitioners,

A petition was sent to the European Parliament by a large number of Varoshiotes and (I believe) senior members of the CY Church, hence the visit.

More info on the work of the Petitions Committee at ... http://www.europarl.europa.eu/parliamen ... y.do?id=49

Thank you,Bill...Finally someone capable of answering a simple question with a clear answer...So the MEP's were petitioned by former residents of Varoshia to visit this particular church...I wonder if they were told they risked getting arrested because the church was in a forbidden military zone??? What do you think?

Again to remind all for the umpteenth time, and this appears on almost all the pages on this thread, that the Church of Agia Zoni is on the tourist trail, and is promoted as a place of interest for people to visit in the Occupied Areas.

As to provocations, do not believe they sought a confrontation, nor were they led in to a confrontation by others, .... as supported by one of the statements used by one of the party, the Bulgarian Lady MEP Ms Nedelcheva, to describe the incident,.... they were she says.... "going to places they were allowed to visit"...

So it should be evident to all that the party were mindful of the delicacy of their work, but, as we all know, the Turkish Army don't do delicate.

No,delicate is not TA's strong point! :)

Falaka = Phalagga in Greek. A favourite pastime of the Greek Colonels during the junta years, 1967-1974.
