I think these MEPs now know much better what sort of place Cyprus is overall...

Don't be such an idiot. The occupation regime has already apologised to the MEPs for this whole shameful episode. It seems that you are the only person left who thinks there was a need to arrest these people. Even the occupation authorities know when they have a public relations disaster on their hands. But not you apparently. You're in a hole and you just keep digging.

The issue is not that these officials strayed into a "forbidden zone" but that the Turkish army is mindlessly and illegally occupying the town of Varosha and preventing its former inhabitants from returning to their homes and properties. You clearly think this is a rational and legal thing to be doing. But then you are a blind advocate of the illegal and the stupid so I'm not surprised.

The MEPs that were held against their will and interrogated by the Turkish Army of Occupation were all members of the Petitions Committee of the European Parliament. A standing committee of the European Parliament elected from and by Euro MEPs.

The Petitions Committee receives a large number of petitions from EU Citizens and part of their remit is to investigate matters raised by petitioners, and to report their findings to the European Parliament and to take up the matters raised with the European Commission if necessary on the behalf of petitioners,

A petition was sent to the European Parliament by a large number of Varoshiotes and (I believe) senior members of the CY Church, hence the visit.

More info on the work of the Petitions Committee at ... http://www.europarl.europa.eu/parliamen ... y.do?id=49

Thank you,Bill...Finally someone capable of answering a simple question with a clear answer...So the MEP's were petitioned by former residents of Varoshia to visit this particular church...I wonder if they were told they risked getting arrested because the church was in a forbidden military zone??? What do you think?

Again to remind all for the umpteenth time, and this appears on almost all the pages on this thread, that the Church of Agia Zoni is on the tourist trail, and is promoted as a place of interest for people to visit in the Occupied Areas.

As to provocations, do not believe they sought a confrontation, nor were they led in to a confrontation by others, .... as supported by one of the statements used by one of the party, the Bulgarian Lady MEP Ms Nedelcheva, to describe the incident,.... they were she says.... "going to places they were allowed to visit"...

So it should be evident to all that the party were mindful of the delicacy of their work, but, as we all know, the Turkish Army don't do delicate.

In a statement made (after their release) by those arrested, the MEPs had everyright to go to anywhere they wished under EU rules. Since Cyprus was covered by that rule, they deemed they too had that authority.

Did they now? So they knew they would be arrested, and went ahead to prove a point anyway...Isn't that what provocateurs do???

Provocateurs do many things. Something is not right here. They must have known the TApatrol the area...are they that shtupid? or was that their intention from the beginning...I dont know but have my suspicions.

Yes, they clearly decided to get themselves arrested to prove how stupid and moronic the Turkish army are. The Turkish army duly obliged.

Bananiot wrote:Matsis spoke on the radio this morning. He said that he was touched by the ordinary TC's who approached him in the hospital and shared their food with him. There is no doubt the Turkish army have tried to show who the boss is, but remember that the TC's are also calling for the Turkish army to leave them alone now. Perhaps together we can achive a lot.

Bananiot, in order for the Turkish Army to leave Cyprus, there needs to be a settlement based on True Federation, True Democracy, Human Rights, International Law and the EU Principles. Once this is done, there won't be any excuse for Turkey to remain in Cyprus, since they will not be needed to protect anyone, because everyone's rights will be protected by the EU. The ONLY reason to have any foreign troops in Cyprus, is to protect illegalities. That's what they are doing right now and nothing else. Therefore, if we want foreign troops out of Cyprus, ALL Cypriots must embrace the above principles, as well as let go of any Enosis and Taksim dreams in the future.
