TOKYO—A ferocious tsunami spawned by one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded slammed Japan's eastern coast Friday, killing hundreds of people as it swept away boats, cars and homes while widespread fires burned out of control. Tsunami warnings blanketed the entire Pacific, as far away as South America, Canada, Alaska and the entire U.S. West Coast.

Some reports say 10,000 - others go as high as 88,000, as whole towns were simply swamped.

Well said but that's not entirely true.

Given Japan's foresight and genius.. extraordinary high engineering standards, nearly all major buildings and freeways withstood the brunt of the quake, none collapsed completely because they were PLANNED that way beforehand.
What happened was a sad tragedy but the casualties are in the bare hundreds thanks to their ingenuity.

Had it been in an African or Caribbean country like Haiti, the casualties would have surpassed the 100's of thousands... and the rebuilding and development tab picked up by the West( as usual) running in the Trillions of dollars.

Our thoughts go out to Japan, but we know the characteristic resilience and brilliance of these hard working people, and I'm confident they'll bounce back from this tragedy relatively quickly.

View Kuru's picture above.
Freeway engineered to split in the middle rather than collapsing like dominoes and spilling cars all over the place.

That's as far as the quake goes.
The consequent tsunami is a whole different ball game.
how would one go about 'Tsunami proofing' a country?
Tricky.

Let's not exaggerate here! The epicenter was out in the sea at least 50km away from the nearest land so construction genius had nothing to do with it! Had it been inland nothing and nobody would be left standing to brag about how great their buildings are!

 It's early hours still so the number of victims won't be known for a couple of weeks and I won’t be surprised if its in the tens of thousands.
