My main criticism of Paphitis' remark is that it is off-topic: that said like anything else there is probably some scope if not for cutting the costs but ensuring what ever is spent is spent more efficiently - scope for another topic?

Personally, I think the RoC should cull teacher numbers and slash spending to the education and health systems!!!

I think, thinking is not your strong faculty Paphitis. But, I get your drift. If you have an issue with some forumers it is childish to take it out on the social aspects of the society.

P.S. What should we do with the bananas we save from the culling of education and health sectors?

I bet you don't get my drift.

The Cyprus Public sector is plagued with politically appointed parasites who are not there on merit, do not provide the Cypriot taxpayer with good value and proper no nonsense professional service. This is not only true at CyAir, but is also true within the education, and health system.

It is funny that you would jump on the the high horse the minute I mention the taboo subject of slashing these 2 sectors. At the end of the day, there is little difference between these 2 sectors and CyAir.

You would know a lot about politically motivated appointments and nepotism Bananiot whilst very skilled people are waiting on tables. Afterall, your appointment was just that under the Vasilleiou Government, and the Cypriot tax payer has been stuck with you ever since!

On the matter of CY Air , as well as privatization and cost savings, the other way forward is amalgamation with another carrier, an increasing trend amongst airlines in recent years.

...... as long as it keeps naming aircraft after the stolen towns.

nobody would want to climb into bed with CY in its present state, unless suffering from a business version of "beer goggles".

.... yes ok, privatisation, cost savings, efficiencies etc would come first... and another consideration to put in to the mix... CY Air does have the attraction of that marvellous new base at the new LCA.

LCA doesn't come into it. The unions do. That is the problem.

And let's say the RoC is able to slash the workforce and introduce other efficiency drives and it becomes a profitable operation, then they would probably want to keep it.

The other possibility is to sell it cheap, and then allow natural attrition to take its course as well as offer redundancy packages. Workers agreed to a pay cut and wage freeze, but the workforce coould be culled. There is a lot of dead wood holding the company back. There is no choice but to stand up against the unions who will strike, but the company could hire contract pilots in the interim. Perhaps even importing foreign pilots will give the unions a clear message that CyAir will not be held to ransom.

I have seen this kind of stuff before in Australia. At one stage QANTAS used RAAF pilots and imported North American pilots to derail industrial action. If this didn't happen then QANTAS would be in the same boat as CyAir.
