lord save cyprus from any more clueless, 'well-meaning' brits who think they know best.
Cyprus need saving from prejudiced bigots who think they are whiter than white...The Brits cannot do us any more harm,
they've done quite enough damage already, thanks.

can't speak for mal (although wot a star... wish he woz still around) but i wasn't around in the 50s. if i had been i'd have probably left the island 'cos it wouldn't have been a safe place for an outspoken, headstrong maverick like me. i'd like to think i'd have been far sighted enough not to get caught up in all the enosis fervour... however, having said that, cyprus at the time was too small, too strategic and too vulnerable to go it alone - and the eu hadn't been invented yet - so i can understand why the majority of cypriots wanted to attach themselves to a larger country with whom they felt most comfortable and safe. anything to get away from former colonialists.
Agreed about the British,they did enough damage...But it doesn't mean all should be condemned...There are intelligent British people with a strong social conscience who are interested in our plight,so we should not lock them out,imho...
I think I also agree with you that it wouldnt have been easy for a GC to get away from Enosis fever...Now you need to realise that it would've been even harder for a TC to get away from Taksim fever,once the Enosis fever was unleashed..
We must really stop blaming each other,Mala (I like that name so even if you are not him,do you mind me calling you that?)...And you must stop saying I am only trying to justify the events of 74...Nothing is further from the truth...We mustn't stifle dialogue before it even starts...Try to imagine this...If as you say,and I agree,that the majority of Cypriots wanted to attach themselves to a larger country they felt comfortable and safe with,what about the more vulnerable minority of Cypriots? didnt they have the need to attach themselves to a country they felt safe and comfortable with???
sure, but they attached themselves to former ruthless and exploitative colonialists from only a few decades previously. if u'd chosen... i dunno... switzerland or begium, then everything would have been cool.
BirKibrisli wrote: Once you accept that,and stop blaming the TCs for aiding and abetting Turkey,we can start having a sensible dialogue...
sure, but the fact is, u did aid and abet a former despised colonialist... as well as the, at the time, incumbent one (ie britain).

birk. problem is there are two main types of tc.
1. those descended from the ottomans, former colonialists. difficult for people to understand and empathise with former colonialists. cypriots aren't unique in this. and, in any event, turkey continues to colonise to this very day so u belong to a nation which continues to be culpable. see the problem?
2. those descended from locals who converted to islam to avoid taxation/persecution during the arduous years of ottoman rule; ie. those who turned their back on their history, traditions and belief systems for the sake of an easy life. again, difficult for people to understand and empathise with such a shallow group of turncoats lacking in conviction.
so that's the issue. tcs today need to stop bitching and wailing (or in the case of vp, behaving in a contemptible manner) and work REALLY, REALLY hard to
earn some understanding, empathy and compassion;
having some self respect would help.
those brave tcs who flew the flag of the republic at the recent demonstrations in the north had the right idea.
