BAGIS: ‘CYPRUS PROBLEM SHOULD BE SOLVED’

Postby boomerang » Sat Mar 05, 2011 11:43 pm

Turkish Minister of State and Chief Negotiator with the EU Egemen Bağış has expressed the need for a rationalistic solution to the Cyprus Problem.

He also said that the Cyprus should not be put as a precondition for Turkey in its European Union membership process adding that it is necessary to solve the Cyprus issue.

Speaking at a gathering in Istanbul, Bağış said that the Cyprus issue is a serious obstacle in the way of Turkey’s EU membership.

I've thought about that too.... it's quite possible to happen in the nick of time, because the merits of giving up Cyprus far outweigh hanging on.

this is a non brainer turkey wants eu membership...if they thought cyprus was worth hanging on, a bigger prize would be running the eu via the most seats in eu parliament...

the turks are not going to wait for the roc to be eu president...this wll amount for slap in the face for them...

the writing is on the wall...

this is the first time bagis spoke of a solution without uttering 2 people and 2 states...but rather we need a solution...

he admitted a non solution is a serious obstacle in the way of Turkey’s EU membership...hint, hint?...

the tcs should be paying more attention to turkey's policy shift...

Turkish FM says it’s time to make more serious decisions about Turkey’s EU bid

Published: 3/4/2011

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Friday that it was time for Turkey to make more decisions about country’s bid to join the 27-nation bloc.

"Time has come to take more serious steps and make more serious decisions about Turkey’s EU process. We expect EU to make a more comprehensive assessment," Davutoglu told a press conference following his talks in Brussels.

Earlier in the day, Davutoglu, as the Chairman of the Committee of Ministers of Council of Europe, had meetings with CoE Secretary-General Thorbjorn Jagland and EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton at the meeting of "CoE-EU High-Level Dialogue." He also had a separate meeting with Ashton, EU Commissioner for Enlargement Stefan Fule and Commissioner for home Affairs Cecilia Malmstrom.

Davutoglu urged EU to speed up efforts for opening of negotiation chapters, saying, "we cannot walk this way wondering during every rotating EU presidency if a new chapter will be opened. We started on our journey to see the end of the road, not to go round in circles."

On visa-free travel of Turkish nationals to EU countries, Davutoglu said that he shared his disappointment with EU officials.

Last month, an EU council of interior and justice ministers refused to authorize the European Commission to launch negotiations with Turkey that could lead to visa-free travel for Turkish nationals on EU soil. Turkish government said it fulfilled all the obligations for launch of talks on visa issue and demanded fair treatment as with all European Union candidate countries on free movement of Turkish nationals in member countries.

"We expect EU to keep its words," Davutoglu said. "We cannot tolerate a treatment other than shown to any other countries."

Davutoglu said he also met Belgium’s Deputy Prime Minister & Foreign Minister Steven Vanackere and discussed bilateral relations as well as preparations for the UN Conference on Least Developed Countries to take place in Istanbul in May.

he talks about more turkey desicions, serious steps and about rotating presidency...refering to the roc presidency perhaps?...

another priority for turkey is the visa thingie...

the turks have tried everything but only to be met with a wall in front of them...they are finally realising their path runs directly through cyprus...I think they knew it but they thought they can go around the long way...

I am have not actually found anything to read about the demonstration either in the occupied area by the TC's who do not wish to unite with the rest of the Island or the peace demonstration in the free areas of people wanting unification and freedom for OUR Country.

You guys need to make up your minds...

The TCs are either irrelevant and all the decisions are taken by Turkey OR the TCs have the power to influence Turkish policy...You can't say one thing in one thread and another in another...

May I remind you that there is a general election in Turkey on 12 June 2011,and all these statements are for internal consumption...The AKP and Erdogan are desperate to increase their votes, and I wouldn't be surprised if they start pouring the pressure on the EU...What they will be doing after the elections is another matter!
