The Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has strongly criticized the European Union for creating obstacles in the way of Turkey’s membership to the bloc. Speaking during an event organized yesterday by the Turkish German Economic Congress in Istanbul, the Turkish Prime Minister accused the European Union of duplicity, stating that the EU’s goal was to create a Christian club rather than a centre for the alliance of civilizations.
Touching upon the Cyprus Problem, Erdoğan also criticized the European Union for accepting the Greek Cypriot Administration into the bloc before the settlement of the Cyprus Problem.
Reminding that there are two states in Cyprus, one in the North and one in the South, the Turkish Prime Minister reminded that this was clearly stated in the 2004 UN-sponsored Annan Plan.
“Is there a country called Cyprus? There is no such country. There is a state in the North and a state in the South. This was clearly stated in the Annan Plan” he added.
Pointing out that the Annan Plan had envisaged the creation of a bi-zonal state; Erdoğan said that Turkey had played its part towards reaching a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus Problem.
“The EU had told us to work towards persuading the Turkish Cypriots to accept the Annan Plan while they promised to persuade the Greek Cypriots. When we asked them what would happen if the Greek Cypriots did not accept the Annan Plan they told us not to worry” he said, adding that the Greek Cypriot Side had been allowed to join the EU despite rejecting the settlement plan while the Turkish Cypriots which had voted overwhelmingly in favour of settlement continued to be punished with isolations.
