PS at the end of this week I will be off Island and out of internet contact for a few days, so do not be alarmed if what ever you dish up does not attract a quick reply:

Schnauzer wrote:'Uncle Tom's Cabin'.............by H. B. Stowe.

Literature that was banned (like so many others in the USA) since the content sails a little too close to the wind.

Now let's tell the whole story, Schnauzer, my friend. :D The U.S. didn't ban it, as your sentiments above would have many believe. The book, whose theme was antislavery, was published in 1852 during the height of Southern slavery and the ever increasing momentum of the Abolitionist Movement (anti-slavery). It sold over 300,000 copies in its first year of publication and is hailed as both the best-selling novel and second best-selling book - after the Bible - of the Nineteenth Century. It was banned in some Southern states, because of its theme, as they were proponents of slavery. Beyond that, some conservatives dismissed it because it was considered to contain some "vulgar" language (mild compared to what I read on this forum by the way), vulgar in the sense that it contrasted with the proper British language of the literature popular among the literate at the time. At least for as long as I've been alive, Uncle Tom's Cabin generally has been required reading for secondary students because it is thought to have bolstered abolitionism and helped lay the foundation for the Civil War.

There you have it. There she be.

Where'd your reply go Schnauzer? ... Attempted to respond to it and got a strange message - "Sorry, can only reply to posts in this forum" - then ... poof! ... your post was gone.

Curious ...

... And no, the Civil War didn't "take care" of it; the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution did.

I deleted my post since I felt that I acted in some haste with my reply (possibly the result of my being slightly tipsy) and, after some consideration, felt that you might find the ignorance I displayed quite insulting.

Therefore, I feel it my duty to apologize for any offence.

Best Wishes. Schnauzer.
