Spreading extremism

Postby Piratis » Sun Aug 14, 2005 5:59 pm

Recently we had a number of more extremists joining the forum.
These people are mostly teens that didn't even have the chance to get away from their parents in order develop their own opinion about things.

And what happened? A couple of teens managed to spread hate, direct all discussions were they wanted, and the "elite" mature members in here (those that think they can solve the Cyprus problem), didn't manage to resist, they followed along the hate track and fall in the trap of some extremists.

The question is: If the educated, intelligent and mature members of this forum could not handle a couple of kids, then how can the societies handle the organized and well funded (even from abroad some times) extremists of the real world?

I clearly said my opinion to those extremists a couple of times. You can search end find my posts. Beyond that those people are better ignored. Making fights in here doesn't serve any purpose.

Also I didn't even bother discussing anything with the Turkish extremists. (Theq etc). For me it was enough to confirm that such people exist in Turkey and they are not just the poor uneducated ones.

I would prefer a world without extremists, but if they exist I would prefer to see them and know their views and intentions rather than close my eyes and live in a nice utopian internet world.

As far as I'm concerned, the extremists represent a minority, albeit a vocal one. They have no interest in debate, they only seek pronouncements and hyperbole. Therefore, there is no point in negotiating with them, because they will never appreciate alternative points of view and the debate cannot progress with their involvement. It will always return to the tried and tested mantras that has been part of their education.

This depends on whom you include in the extremists group. If I remember correctly you criticized people for saying "Turkish troops out of Cyprus". If for you these are extremists then they are far from a small minority.

I agree that there is no point in negotiating with extremists. I don't.
However if progress can not happen if extremists are present then this means that no progress can happen in societies because extremists are present. Or do you think that goverments should censor what people say based on their ideas of what is right and what is wrong even when what they say doesn't violate any laws?

I believe Mr. Cannedmoose is referring to me. Erolz is an extremist, he justifies retention of stolen land and justifies it via the 'compensation rationalization', a justification I have already proven to be illogical and racist.

I would like people to note however that not all the teens in this forum are extremists...

Piratis, it seems you have lost all hope in this forum, does that mean you ahve lost hope in the real world about the cyprus issue?

ChomskyFan, I think you should better edit your post since Erolz might not be able to reply to you.

In any case, the topic here is not who is extremist and who is not. The topic is: Can a society resist the extremists when the educated moderate people fall in the hate trap?

Personally I am not so optimistic. Take a look at the "TRNC" for example. The extremists that manage the occupied areas have managed to "infect" the majority of the population who is now immune to arguments about human rights and they are looking for excuses as to why violating the human rights of others is ok. Only a small minority (Sener Levent etc) managed to keep their correct principles.

Of course this happens to our side also. Some people like you ChomskyFan, can not see that extreme nationalism is not good. To extreme nationalism the answer is not extreme nationalism. The answer is rational realistic views that can help to achieve the best possible future. And the best possible future is not always the same as the ideal one. Having utopian aims will lead nowhere. (However some principles can never be sacrificed either)
