Can’t you see the gimmick is up? Greece is bankrupt and finished, and the sooner we cut off all ties with her the better!

Do you know why Moodys and other credit ratings have downgraded Cyprus? It’s because we have ties in our banking system with that of the gypsies so the sooner we cut EVERYTHING off the better.

Greece is far from finished. The current financial problems are temporary.

I disagree with you that it is on our interest to cut our ties with the rest of Greeks. They are our only true ally.

Isolating Cyprus is the aim of Turkey/UK, because in this way they can abuse our island easier. It is definitely not in our interests to help them with their plans.

Greece is just bringing us down mate…she now has to repay some 300 odd billion dollars! When do you think she will ever manage that? She will always just be plodding along paying the interest accrued just to survive! There is no progress for her anymore!

It’s bailout time from Greece and you’d better believe it!

Yes, let's blame Greece for everything!

While we're at it, let's make fun of their dire situation despite the economic hardships that will be inflicted on the Greek population from tough new austerity measures and public sector rationalization and efficiency drives.

Greece will pull through, but it will take a long time. It will take at least one generation to get through it. Austerity measures, budget cuts and higher taxation will be the bitter pill for the people. And the saddest thing of all is that the younger generation, which is invariably highly educated and skilled, will be underemployed creating an unwanted brain drain.

Greeks are capable of anything when they put their minds to it, and band together as one united people. The Olympic Games come to mind, where there was a general vibrancy and belief of far greater things. I was there and saw what they are capable of achieving!! :D

it's like wanting to stay mates with some ugly, unpopular, smelly kid in class who's developed a toilet problem. there's just no upside.

You would, if he was your brother. Unless you are an asshole.

have to say, i'd have serious doubts we were related.

A real independence could be an acceptable alternative. But Cyprus was never given a real independence. What was forced on us with the 1960 agreements was some pseudo independence with foreign troops, foreign bases, foreign judges of the supreme court, "guarantor powers" and Ottoman style privileges granted to an 18% minority on the expense of the rest of Cypriots.

A real independence is anyway impossible. Is there one country in the world that can call itself really independent, that doesn't depend at all on other countries?

What Cyprus could get was an independence similar to that which most other ex-British colonies got. Not perfect, but far better than the one it finally got.

And the reason for this very restricted independence, compared to the other colonies, was exactly the presence of two competing nationalisms in the island. Among GCs this was expressed as the ideology of Enosi. This is what gave the UK the power to keep officially much of its control over Cyprus, and the right of Greece and Turkey to intervene in the internal affairs of Cyprus.

If there was a single Cypriot nationalism instead, with the goal of a real independent Cyprus where ethnic identity wouldn't matter at all, the British imperialists would have it much more difficult. They would still try to divide the Cypriot people and keep control of Cyprus, but we made it far too easy for them.

And these Olympic Games, and the big amount of money that was thrown away there, is one of the reasons that Greece is today in the situation it is.

Also, I don't understand why organizing Olympic Games (which, sure, Greece did very well) is such a big achievement to be proud of. Does this really offer to the world much?

Yes it is promising in the longer term.

You don't just dig yourself out of a hole overnight! Every other industrialised country has been where Greece is now!

Problem is Greece was never out the hole in the first place so she is clueless as to what lies above!

There seems to be an illusion going round that Greece was once prosperous but has now fallen, but nothing could be further from the truth! Greece was ALWAYS the black sheep of Europe and has now sunk even deeper.

Greece is a prosperous nation and the people are doing just fine!

300 Billion in debt is not a massive amount of money!

I remember when Australia was 800-900 Billion dollars in debt and rising, and that was about 2 decades ago!
