Brave words by Sener Levent

It is worth noting that Talat’s claim that it is the Turkish Cypriot themselves who administer the northern part of Cyprus is rejected by Sener Levent, the outspoken editor of the Turkish Cypriot daily newspaper Arfrika who is being persecuted and jailed for insisting that it is not the Turkish Cypriots who rule the north, but Turkey.

Levent repeated this charge this week in his daily column in the Greek Cypriot daily Politis dealing with the illegal sale of Greek Cypriot property in the north.

Levent argued that “basically we (the Turkish Cypriots) should have passed the law adopted by the Greek Cypriots in the south. Instead, we loot the territory we occupy in the north since 1974. We brought over from Turkey more population (settlers) more numerous than our own population. First we loanded them Greek Cypriot properties and later we gave them title deeds, as if then property was their’s. The one who have the most title deeds and collected the most applause was the party of Talat.

Does this people (the Turkish Cypriots) like the sale off of its motherland. Instead of demanding an explanation from those who gave away as a gift this land to the people they brought from abroad, they rewarded those who did this by making them their rulers.

“Our brothers from Turkey, that even the most progressive of our political parties refer to as “New Cypriots,” began to sell off and to get rid of whatever they possessed for hundreds of thousands and millions of pounds sterling. And, what is more, by using property titles that the International Court brands as false while we remain spectators to this looting.”

Referring to the new law approved by the Cyprus parliament to limit the property sale off, Levent said “The Greek Cypriot side is doing what we the Turkish Cypriots should have done a long time ago. They approve the laws that we should have passed.””

Free speech in the "TRNC":

Shots fired at north newspaper's offices

"Two shots were fired into the front door of the north’s daily newspaper Afrika last night in an apparent warning to its editor Sener Levent to desist from writing.
“We heard two rounds fired and all rushed into the hallway to see what had happened. There we found two bullet holes, one in the doorframe and one in the wall,” director and writer at Afrika Aliosman Tabak told the Cyprus Mail last night.
He said a note had also been left, warning Levent that if he continued writing he “would be killed”.
Afrika newspaper has been at the forefront of arguments over banners “insulting to Turkey” carried at a mass rally that took place on January 28 against economic austerity measures being imposed on the Turkish Cypriot community by Ankara. The paper has been openly encouraging those who carried such banners to exhibit them again at another mass rally planned for next Wednesday.
It is not the first time the paper has come under attack from unknown assailants. In 2001, a bomb destroyed the publication’s printing presses. No one was ever arrested for the attack.
Tabak declined to speculate on who fired the shots, but suspicions are likely to fall on far-right groups operating in the north.
Police and ballistics experts were on the scene last night.

Sounds like a couple of VP's people.

Typical Turkish silencing techniques, practiced wide in Turkey, and they want to join the EU FFS.

Shows us that Armed Taksim Terrorists are still active in the Occupied Areas and are able to go around in broad daylight and act with impunity and without too much fear of investigation let alone prosecution, which must lead us to say that if this isn't State Sponsored Terrorism by the Turkish Regime, then by turning a blind eye to incidents such as these it supports the terrorist acts that fit in with its Taksim Aims.

Since when encouraging people to insult others have been called freedom of speech or freedom of press? Neither what Afrika newspaper did nor the brainless who fired at the doors of Afrika r rightful...

... and how do u know the ones who shot at the doors of Afrika newspaper were not the far right idiots of South in hope of destabilizing and creating uneasiness in North?

what isn't right is to equate legitimate criticism of the dirty regime controlling the north with gun shots that could have cost someone's life.

maybe it was the grey wolves wot done it in a false flag operation - so they could then accuse free cypriots of doing it in an attempt to destablise the occupation regime.

where were u last night, insan?

I heard Gaddaffi is moving to the occupied areas to escape justice and to teach Eroglu how to run things

So Mr Levent had better be careful.
