Turkey warns U.S. ambassador over media comments

By Daren Butler

ISTANBUL | Thu Feb 17, 2011 5:31am EST

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkish officials have warned the new U.S. Ambassador Francis Ricciardone against interfering in its domestic affairs after he commented on Turkey detaining reporters despite pledging support for press freedom.

Prominent journalist Soner Yalcin and three colleagues were detained this week and were due to appear in court on Thursday in connection with an alleged plot to overthrow the government.

"On the one hand there exists a stated policy of support for a free press. On the other hand, journalists are put under detention. We are trying to make sense of this," Ricciardone told reporters on Tuesday.

the usa must be stupid if they can't make sense of the fact that turkey's regime borders on the fascist. and all this talk of 'free press' is a load of bull. and it's about time this basket-case country was turfed out of nato and given a good spanking.

I can't help thinking that Erdogan is mad and his psychosis, is showing up the Turks for what they really are. I think the global community is now realising that Erdogan and his nation are hiding dictatorship in a lipstick type democracy.

Amid ongoing debates sparked by the US ambassador's comments on media freedom in Turkey, the US-based group Freedom House and the human-rights commissioner of the Council of Europe call on the government to cease media violations. 'The harassment of media outlets and journalists who hold dissident views is a clear attempt to silence critical voices,' Freedom House senior researcher Karin Deutsch Karlekar tells the Daily News

Bill you need to start another FB on the termination of the Customs Union for Turkey. she is abusing it and the EU/UK/USA are allowing it to happen. They themselves are just hypocrits.

insan if that is a real post of yours and not a joke I think you are biased and failing to see that Turkey has take a hard line approach and you are therefore failing to see the impact not only Turks but also TC's and you are missing the point on the invasion of Cyprus and the occupation of the Island for over 35 years.
