Are you ready for “Windows Quantum”?

Ok here’s the hypothetical story…

You’ve just bought a brand new laptop after overhearing a salesperson brag about the new “Windows Quantum Interface” that this new laptop model comes with, without actually seeing it! (<-- it is hypothetical!)

Ok, so you rush home, plug it in, push the “on” button and within a minute or two instead of the standard Windows desktops (XP, Vista, W7) that we’ve all come to expect… you find this!

(Needless to say that each icon would open a similar box to the first, with the relevant content, etc)

What would your reaction be?

NB: Serious honest replies appreciated as this research is for real!

It looks like the front page of so many smart phones, ipads, tablets etc....

which is a good thing ... easy navigation.

As usual on the technical side something that is very intertesting, which made me think about windows. The thing about the current versions of windows is that it is programs or applications based, rather than data based:I have never been too happy with having to go to the start button (or "my computer" icon) to start looking for the data but one can however rig Windows to do something similar already by sticking short cuts to folders (or even the folders themselves) on the desk top:I have already started to do that: this is the obvious logical conclusion,:

What I'd like to see how applications are accessed: are for example, different photo editing programs accessed through the Pictures icon or word processors through the documents icon?

Not a good idea putting folders or large files on your desktop, it really slows the system down. Stick to short-cuts. This is especially true in networks where you can logon to any machine and are presented with your personal desktop, it really slows down the sign on!

Most people (myself included) use very few applications on a day-to-day basis...

I quite like Windows 7 but I have a few apps (FireFox, Explorer, Word, Outlook) docked on the toolbar at the bottom of the screen and rarely need to hit the 'Start' button...

My reaction would be: "WTF??!!??" Even if I look past the primitive graphics, this looks more like "Windows for Dummies" than "Windows Quantum". It would be like taking Windows OS and downgrading it to a mobile phone functionality (not even smart phone). That said, some time ago I was looking for some very basic OS for my parents who don't really know how to use computers. An OS that would allow just a few basic things would be great for them. But that would take a lot more than just some windows app that will have some shortcuts in it. This can already been done by using the windows desktop.

That's precisely the problem with everything they've come up with so far... instead of writing OSs for PEOPLE they're writing them for themselves!

What I'd like to see how applications are accessed: are for example, different photo editing programs accessed through the Pictures icon or word processors through the documents icon?

In an environment like this you'd first click on “Pictures” where you'd see them all as thumbnails and a row of tools at the top or the bottom of the dialog box like… [View] [Edit] [Delete] [Send] would appear. Once “Edit” is clicked a choice of available image editing programs would be offered.
