As you and I well know the legitimate ROC died december 1963 and I owe the illegitimate hijacked Greek ROC that emerged from its ashes no loyalty whatsoever. I dont recognise it as representing me and Christofias is not my president. Had the events of 63 not occurred then yes we could have had a much different conversation. I cannot revoke the fact that I , my parents and grandparents were all Cypriot born and therefore as such I cannot revoke or deny my Cypriot origins. Its a fact. I like you am fortunate in that I dont receive or need the benefits of a Cypriot Passport having lived in the UK since 64 and held UK citizenship and passsport since 1966 I only acquired a ROC one relatively recently as a symbolic act to assert my Cypriot orgins -an act of defiance if you like to say look I am still here and in no way does it signify my recognition of the existing ROC as the legimate government of all Cyprus. And until a solution that is the position I take. I cannot have loyalty or allegiance to an illegimate government that tried to destroy me and my family. I dont care if it is recognised by the world as the government of Cyprus-it isnt recognised as such by me and I guess thousands of othe TC like me, I hope you understand my feelings.
Hi Issy,
I understand everything you wrote from a philosophical point of view, but it does not change the facts, that the moment you consider yourself a Cypriot, which the term "Cypriot" is an extension of the RoC only and given to you as a birthright, but by not abdicating your Cypriotness, you are in fact accepting the RoC as your representative whether you take part in it or not. Regardless whether you agree with the internal politics/problems of Cyprus or not, one remains a Cypriot and so does their responsibility as a Cypriot, regardless whether they practice those responsibilities or not is another matter, and since as Cypriots we are not forced to accept RoC passports or even vote in the elections, it doesn't make us any less Cypriots in the eyes of the law and the world. If on the other hand any TC wants to stand by their principles on the points you raised above on what has happened in the past and do not want to be counted as a Cypriot any longer, then one can abdicate their RoC citizenship once and for all and does not instead apply for a RoC passport, which is afforded to all Cypriots.
If any citizen of the world can discard their citizenship responsibilities to suit their own agendas just so not to conform to the laws of the land, temporarily, one can find any excuse to do so if it were possible. I understood everything you wrote and sympathise with it, since we both went through the same situation at the same time along with few other TCs here on the forum, but unless one abdicates their Cypriot Citizenship, they are then bound to the representation of them by the RoC as Cypriots !
