Cypriots need to share their experience with Turks and Kurds of Turkey. Please vote.
The Kurdish language belongs to the Iranian branch of the Indo-European family. Before August 2002, the Turkish government placed severe restrictions on the use of Kurdish, prohibiting the language in education and broadcast media. The Kurdish alphabet is still not recognized in Turkey, and the use of Kurdish names containing the letters X, W, and Q, which do not exist in the Turkish alphabet, is not allowed.
Close to 20 million Kurds live in Turkey, about 22% of total population. Kurds are the population segment in Turkey with the fastest growth.
Kurds demand that Turkey recognizes Kurdish as an official language. Why Turkish is official in Cyprus for 18% T-Cypriots & Kurdish not in Turkey for almost 25% Kurds? Why Turkey speaks a different language in the two situations?
The controversial Kurdish-language television station Roj TV has been nominated (February 2011) as a candidate for a Nobel Peace Prize by a group that includes former honoree Desmond Tutu, a South African archbishop.
