There is more gas coming out of both ends of the fascists in Cyprus then there is reserves under the sea. You have more chance of harnessing this gas and it is not as dangerous as the stuff under the sea.

The President of the Republic had a meeting with the Prime Minister of Greece

The developments in the Cyprus problem, the energy policy of the EU, in the light of today’s European Council meeting, the developments in Egypt as well as the role of Cyprus and Greece regarding the evacuation of foreigners from Egypt, were the focus of the meeting that the President of the Republic Mr Demetris Christofias had in Athens, yesterday, with the Prime Minister of Greece, Mr George Papandreou.

The Prime Minister of Greece, referring to the Cyprus problem expressed the hope that the Turkish Cypriot side will finally respond to the well known proposals of President Christofias for an honourable and mutual compromise, in the framework of a Cypriot negotiation, without pressing timeframes and arbitration, and called on the Turkish Cypriot side to display a constructive stance and to demonstrate a real willingness to find a solution.

Mr Papandreou reiterated that the Cyprus problem constitutes a top priority of Greek foreign policy, noting that Greek-Turkish relations cannot be fully normalised unless the Cyprus problem is solved.

In relation to energy policy issues and specifically the issue of the delimitation of the sea zones, Mr Papandreou said that the governments of Greece and Cyprus are in constant coordination, closely examining the developments and taking the necessary decisions and initiatives, but noted that this is a sensitive sector.

For his part, the President of the Republic thanked the Prime Minister because as he said the “Cyprus and the Cyprus problem constitute a personal priority of the Greek Prime Minister and his government. “This interest and support is expressed with deeds and not with words and we are grateful for this”, he stressed.

President Christofias said that he briefed the Greek Prime Minister on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem and that there was a detailed exchange of views on the results of the meeting with the UN Secretary General in Geneva.

“Our whole stance and the positions we expressed in Geneva indicated our good will to proceed, in a practical and effective manner, to the achievement of a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem, the soonest possible”, the President of the Republic said characteristically.

Replying to a relevant question, he said, however, that the Turkish side’s insistence on “positions that are outside the provisions of the UN Resolutions and the agreed” as well as its insistence on refusing to discuss the linking of the issues concerning territorial adjustments, the influx of thousands of settlers and the property chapter, “create a significant difficulty”.

“The Secretary-General has clearly shown that he likes- not to say he supports- this linkage. And we will need to work both with the Secretary-General and the international community in order to exert pressure on Turkey, because that is where decisions are taken and surely they are not taken in occupied Nicosia”, President Christofias emphatically said and added that “this is the key” for achieving a better outcome until the next meeting.

“Otherwise”, he noted, “the Turkish side gives me the impression – and I said this before the Secretary-General as well – that it is obstructing the process so that we reach a deadlock when we meet again and to put pressure once more on the Secretary-General to summon a quadripartite meeting, something that is beyond and outside his mandate, in order to discuss the internal aspects of the Cyprus problem in tandem with the issue of guarantees and the alliance treaties”.

The President also reiterated that “we have the good will and we are determined, if Turkey cooperates, to proceed soon, this year even, to a solution of the Cyprus problem, which must surely be viable, functional and accepted by the people”.

With regard to developments in the Middle East, President Christofias expressed the wish that events in Egypt would have a positive outcome for the benefit of the peoples of the countries of the region and for the benefit of peace and cooperation.

He also conveyed his gratitude to the Prime Minister and the Government of Greece for the transport of Cypriot citizens, with a C-130 of the air force, from Egypt to Athens and then to Cyprus, stressing that “this constitutes yet another proof of the brotherly relations between our two countries and the brotherly capacity of Greece and Cyprus”.

Regarding the energy issue, the President of the Republic said “the starting point of our common approach is that it is up to each state to exercise its sovereign rights, which emanate from the Law of the Sea”.

Responding to a question regarding the cooperation between Greece and Cyprus in the energy sector
, President Christofias said the two countries are in a “daily and complete coordination”. Moreover, he sent a heartfelt request towards both Cyprus and Greece in general, to keep a low profile and be in full cooperation when dealing with these matters.

If the gas find is south west of Paphos, within the Cypriot EEZ what will Greece contribute exactly?

Support in the demarcation of the EEZ in case it is disputed? Unlikely. Technical knowhow? Since when! What other gas fields has Greece exploited in the past?

Greece has not proceded with the delineation of its own EEZ yet fearing upsetting the Turks. So how is it now said that the Greek and Cypriot EEZ areas adjoin?
