The colorful mixture of “Greeks” and their not so colorful history!
The ethnic composition of 21st century Greece is an interesting mix of Bulgarians, Albanians, Slavs, Roma (Gypsies), and even Ottoman remnants!
This newfound 1820s state that was labeled “Greece” should not be confused in any way or form with mythological tales of an “ancient Greece” for no such place ever existed, and there is nothing significant to mention about this mix of people other than a troubled history of poverty, misery, and identity crisis as a result of almost 400 years of oppressive Ottoman slavery and two world wars, that has brought them together and subsequently the gross mismanagement by successive incompetent governments that have finally led to Greece’s downfall in the 21st century.
In fact, so great is this identity crisis that today you’ll find Greeks of Mongolian origin such as the female pictured below, claiming a direct inheritance with Plato and Socrates! It seems that everyone in poverty-stricken Greece wants a piece of mythology to hang onto with which to attain aggrandizement!
The streets of Athens and Thessalonica are littered with these “modern Greeks” all eager to tell you of how they are direct descendants of one ancient great name that they have heard about, or another! They say that in Greece there are more stories invented by the locals in a given day, than movies made in “Bollywood” (India) over two decades!
We will now look at each of these tribes which form the nucleus of this 180 year old state in turn, and through this knowledge we will eventually understand why this newfound country has systematically failed to attain a European standard of existence, and why its inhabitants are unable to settle down in unison, and why they have a tendency to revolt and riot with destructive results at the slightest opportunity.
