Speaking to reporters during a visit to Kyrgyzstan this week, Erdogan criticised the unions and NGOs for their participation by saying, “Who do you [Turkish Cypriots] think you are? We have martyrs, heroes and strategic interests [on Cyprus].”

He added that the demonstration had been “provocative” and that Turkish Cypriots, who were “fed and maintained by Turkey”, had “no right to hold such protests”.

The opposition Republican Turkish Party (CTP) yesterday added its voice to those objecting to Erdogan’s statements, saying that while they did not want to see a rift growing between Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots, it was not right to view the Turkish Cypriots as “kept parasites”. The party concluded that Erdogan had been misinformed and provoked.

You can apologise now those words were not used by Erdoğan.

“fed and maintained by Turkey” = “kept parasites”!

How would you interpret "fed and maintained"?

CTP interpreted as “kept parasites”.!

You don't like the interpretation, call the CTP to apologise and not me.

The article is an extract from last year, but recently I have heard that there may be a referendum in May 2011 unfortunately I have no sources that I can point towards to support if such a referendum is to take place in May 2011.

A new United Nations plan is being prepared in attempt to end three-decades of division in Cyprus according to a leading Turkish Cypriot daily.
Under the title “A new plan”, the Demokrat Bakis newspaper reports that the UN Secretary-General will publish his report on Cyprus on the 15th March and on the same day he will invite the two Cypriot leaders to a new summit where he will submit a plan prepared by the United Nations.
Citing information obtained from ‘reliable sources’, Bakis writes that Ban Ki-moon will give the sides two months the most for negotiating this plan.
The UN is reportedly exerting pressure in the direction of not having open-ended negotiations, because of the elections to be held in Turkey and the Republic of Cyprus.
According to the new plan, the sides will discuss all chapters of the negotiations simultaneously. As a result of the insistence of the Turkish side, the “security” issue will be discussed in an international conference with the participation of the guarantor powers within the framework of the above-mentioned timetable.
The sources said the UN gave to the Greek Cypriot side what it wanted by including in the plan the latter’s proposal to discuss all the issues simultaneously.
They added that in parallel to this, the Turkish side’s position to have a timetable in the talks was also included in the plan. The sources said the UN wants an “interim agreement” to be signed in May.
Bakis notes that the plan is similar to the Annan Plan on some points, but on some substantial issues “new openings” are made because the situation has changed.
In a seperate development, Serdar Denktash, leader of the Democratic Party in northern Cyprus has said his party believes that the negotiations to reach a solution to the Cyprus problem will lead to nowhere and that the only thing the Turkish Cypriots achieve by negotiating is to “steal the future” of their children.
In a written statement the day before, Denktas noted that the DP considers that these negotiations should stop and the Turkish Cypriots should continue their way with their own “state”. All our efforts aim at this, he added.
Denktas said that a referendum or “elections” or both will most probably be held by the end of this year and added that they should be prepared for this.

Take 2. Referendum seems to be forthcoming this year.

I wonder if the UN can renege on its resolutions in relation to the non recognition of the occupied area of Cyprus as "trnc" and secondly what reaction would the EU have at the notion of 1/3 of its territory goes to Turkey which may never join the EU. Remembering that the EU has accepted the whole of the Republic of Cyprus as a full fledged member States. I have never heard of a Country giving part of its territory to anyone voluntarily.

If the article is correct, what the above sentence is saying, that since 2004 when the RoC became a EU member, the ball game has changed and that the "new openings" will need to be made also, meaning the "EU Principles".
