Nothing about Turkish Cypriots safety at all, which means, that as soon as Turkey's "strategical needs" are secured by her from others, what ever they may be, which can't be too much, since the mainland is almost a stone throw away, but it may be that they want a piece of the oil and gas action from the RoC in order for Turkey to leave Cyprus for good and start getting serious with her EU accession talks.

Can I just borrow your quote there Kiks for a sec, because I'd like to highlight a portion so that our foolish Spartan friends may CLEARLY SEE how they are a major part of the Cyprus problem…

Please, go ahead, GR.

It is time ALL the foreign powers left Cyprus for Cypriots.

Not so, that is not what I said and you are being silly. It is interesting to see that Viewpoint also rejects my post.

Now GR go back to the bit where I said it will not be long before the north finds a reason to secede from the BBF state. Where would that leave Cyprus ? And please do not bring Greece into it. Greece has neither the desire nor the means to be involved.

I don't see much chances for a referendum in 2011.

For this to happen, you first need some kind of a deal between Eroglu and Christofias. And for this, you need to have the will of GC leadership and of Turkey's leadership. It's unlikely that they show that will before June, before the elections in RoC and Turkey.

Even if we assume that after the elections the will is going to be there, it will still take some time for the final negotiations, and most importantly, to prepare the populations for saying "Yes". This won't be easy, and will take long time. AKEL and Christofias's political future may depend a lot on finding a solution, so we can assume they want one but this doesn't mean they'd like to bring it in a referendum which they know it can't pass through. That could be even worst for them.

If there's going to be some referendum after all, I see it most probably in 2012. But again, I wouldn't count on it. Especially with the way the negotiations between Turkey and EU are going.

The last posting raises some very good questions:

Postby cymart » Sat Feb 05, 2011 1:05 pm

I personally think that the E.U. wants the Cyprus question solved before Cyprus is head of the E.U. next year, otherwise it will cause a lot of complications for everyone?I want to believe that Christophias is sincere when he says he wants a solution a.s.a.p. but I do have doubts whether he wants it immediately or at a time which suits his term of office and re-election prospects, bearing in mind the AKEL still has the old Communist mentality which is to grab power and hold onto it!This could be his downfall if he tries to delay when Turkey and the rest of the world are ready for a solution and this time is most likely in summer after the elections in Cyprus and Turkey. The way things stand,Christophias is unpopular, mainly because of the economy more than anything else and therefore unlikely to be willing to take further risks by trying to get support in a referendum for a solution which some people will strongly oppose!Considering that much of the media here is also likely to back a no vote,as in 2004,he will have an uphill battle on his hands and will effectively be risking everything, not just for himself but also for the AKEL and their control of power, something they will not want to undertake if at all possible! His only lifeline is to make a pact with DISY to campaign for a yes vote,in which case it would have a chance of going through, but doing that would mean overcoming a lot of idealogical and other obstacles among members and supporters of both parties, who are traditionally directly opposed to each other.....my instinct is that he is waiting for the May election results to see what the balance of power will be afterwards before making any decision, although the DISY leader has already openly suggested that the Cyprus issue should not be used in the campaign, which is a good sign, even though Akel have already turned him down...
At the moment,Christophias has little to start a campaign for a yes vote with anyway but a good beginning would be to overhaul the way the Cyprus issue is reported and discussed by the CYBC where there is still a hot bed of rejectionists on the staff from the Papadopoulos era, including the general manager, several well-known journalists and a very bitchy newsreader!Don't even bother to think about Antenna,Mega and often Sigma channels who also follow a rejectionist line....
