Because they can’t afford to?
I know your economy is closely linked with Greece which has fallen apart but has yours gone down the pan as well? anyone who moves south will work, wont they be paid enough to afford it?
They’ll get unemployment benefit and child allowance, but there’s no way you can get a decent home (nowadays starting from €200k) on that.
How do your young generation or people with an average income afford a life in the south?
Some young couples have one or more parents with land which goes a long way towards building a home, or as collateral to buy elsewhere.
Some have nothing but if they’re both employed the bank’s means test isn’t as strict as other EU countries, so it’s still possible to buy/build with a 30-40 year mortgage.
Some build on top of their parent’s house so it only costs a fraction to erect walls and add doors and windows!
Others… like government employees have an advantage with mortgages and borrowing in general because a bank can easily lock-in the monthly repayment with no risks.
So we have a chance as well, your original statement doesnt hold water, if we work hard then we can survive in the south just we do in the north, but we choose not as we do not want to be a minority in a GC state.
