THE “FIASCO ALLIANCE” IN THE MEDITERRANEAN WILL FAIL
In diplomacy processes are fast and the ground slippery. Conditions are usually unstable and the rules liable to change. There are influential surprises and active factors which may not be calculated beforehand. Diplomacy is not carried out with anger and passion. Especially if undertaken through obsession and with an eye to revenge it will yield very bad and sometimes comical results.
Outside of Cyprus, Greek Cypriots have taken a decision to strengthen their ties with Jewish lobbies. Greek Cypriot organisations around the world are moving to augment their cooperation with Jewish lobbies. Greek Cypriots have great expectations of this new alliance. Southern Cyprus is trying to build up a pact with Israel in order to strengthen the lack of a solution on the island and to continue its clichéd anti-Turkish policy.
Greek Cypriot leader Dimitris Christophias is not a former militant, a fascist remnant like Tassos Papadopoulos. Yet, on the southern side of the island, the common denominator for all fractions and ideologies is to produce and practice policies against the Turks.
It seems that upon Dmitris Christophias’ initiative, Greek Cypriot organisations abroad will cooperate with Israel and Jewish lobbies around the world against the Turks. Indeed that PSEKA President Philip Christopher should say in a press meeting that “they have very critical times ahead of them” and the meeting being attended by a delegation from the American Jewish Committee can mean only one thing. Philip Christopher spells out this meaning directly and openly: “Cooperation between Greek and Jewish lobbies in the USA has found new strength”. A new axis is being born.
Of course, Greece takes its place in this axis –or pact- alongside Israel and Southern Cyprus. Rapprochement between Israel and Greece has been going on since 2008. Military affairs having received more attention in relations between the two countries has had a great impact on the said rapprochement.
Indeed, the joint military games carried out near Crete and Greece giving military access to its airspace to Israel are concrete developments. Furthermore the July 2010 visit to Israel by the Greek Prime Minister Papandreou and the immediately following August 2010 visit by Netanyahu to Athens point at the intensity of strategic cooperation between the two countries. That the Israeli Foreign Minister Avider Lieberman should visit Southern Cyprus twice in a year is a sign that Israel is insistent on Southern Cyprus.
As you may recall, certain groups in Israel had argued upon rising tensions between Israel and Turkey that Israel should immediately begin cooperation with Southern Cyprus and in retaliation for the Gaza Fleet and the ship Mavi Marmara taking aid to Gaza, a similar project should be launched from Israel to Cyprus regarding the Cyprus issue.
It is undoubted that Ankara is not uncomfortable with Israel adding itself onto the aggressive Greek-Greek Cypriot joint defence doctrine or its military rapprochement with Greece and Southern.
It is possible that the distribution of underground resources of the Eastern Mediterranean and the attempt to set up a special economic zone which lies behind Southern Cyprus’ blockade of a stable settlement on the island also lie at the background of this rapprochement.
It is not at all surprising for Southern Cyprus and Israel, which rarely implement international law and have little respect for international rules should choose to cooperate. It is interesting to see that Athens still carries on with its traditional anti-Turkish reflex despite the heavy economic crisis which has almost crippled it.
As far as one can see, Papandreou, Christophias and Netanyahu are making an effort to form a new strategic structure in the Mediterranean and to jointly take over Turkey’s strategic position and importance.
The attempts by Southern Cyprus to set up a special economic zone, the distribution of underground resources in the Eastern Mediterranean, Greece allowing Israeli jets access to its own airspace over the Aegean, Greece forcing Turkey to accept its own theses in bilateral problems between the two countries, the Cyprus issue and Southern Cyprus’ sabotage of Turkey’s negotiations with the EU are the important points of this process. These points may even be found in the secret action plan of a tripartite alliance. However neither any of them individually nor any combination of these points is troublesome for Ankara.
In essence, there is no possibility that this jealous “revenge alliance”, which aims to shatter the growing presence of Turkey in its region and tries to solve problems it has with Turkey before the latter reaches a zenith has no chance of succeeding.
Turkey and Northern Cyprus have no intention letting Southern Cyprus take over the underground resources of the Eastern Mediterranean and to set up a special economic zone.
Furthermore the Turkish side continues to make all efforts within the bounds of diplomacy and the law for a solution to the Cyprus problem. Should Southern Cyprus once more choose to deceive the world, the international community, the UN, the EU and Turkey, the reaction of the Turkish side will be clear.
Furthermore, Southern Cyprus is of course using the advantages of being an EU member in order to sabotage Turkey’s relations with the EU. Firstly the EU acquis gives member states this right. Secondly, changing circumstances in Europe and the world are making the EU less attractive. Thirdly, the fact that Southern Cyprus is blocking negotiations is a problem not for Turkey but for the EU. In other words, the problem needs to be solved within the EU. European institutions need to come up with a solution. The whole issue is external to Turkey.
It is an odd decision on the part of Athens to try to encircle Turkey with the energy it should be using to solve problems for its populace suffering in the grip of economic crisis. It would have been more appropriate for Athens to save its productivity for savings on budget spending and not on causing more problems.
Turkey also wants bilateral problems between Greece and itself to be resolved. Ankara’s preference over the issue is summed up by “conciliation of parties” and “implementation of international law”. So approaches such as “forcing into a compromise” and “dealing with Israel to force the opposition to a corner” are only being favoured in Athens.
Israel on the other hand, is making an effort to cause difficulties for Turkey over energy, Eastern Mediterranean, Cyprus, the Aegean and the EU in order to prevent Turkey’s effectiveness in the Middle East from rising. That Israel should be able to get results towards any of these aims in this manner is zero.
There was this Greek man, this Greek Cypriot man and this Jewish man. They wanted to pull a trick on Turkey...
It is like a joke!

Cyprus has every right to take over all of its underground resources in the south of the island and in the north. Its comical that Turkey thinks it can have a say in the matter and if its foolish enough to think it does, then there will definitely be a showdown and this time Turkey wont have the support of the usa, uk nato or the eu.......INSERT COIN....GAME OVER!!!!!

Do you people really think you can walk on our properties unhindered and all things will get better by themselves, its been 36 years and not one Greek cyp has backed down and is continuing the fight to liberate our island.....Turkey and her supporters the few she has left are slowly being backed up against a wall, and soon will be pushed through the wall.....The European Union in its protocol about Cyprus said that the whole of the island is part of the EU and the ROC is the only entity on Cyprus admitted to the EU......i hope you are capable of reading the subtle signs of logic and reality
