European Parliament to investigate persecutions of Christians in the world

Moscow, January 24, Interfax - The European Parliament in the resolution adopted on January session in Strasbourg condemned persecutions of Christians.

"The EU will not turn a blind eye to the persecutions of Christians around the world," the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton said.

The document has become a reaction on the attacks against Christians in Egypt, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Cyprus, Iran and Iraq. It is stressed in the document that there are cases of violating religious freedom and religious discrimination in Europe, the Synodal Department for External Church Relations reported on its website.

In the adopted resolution the European Parliament urges to investigate attacks against Christians and punish the guilty, denounced the instrumentalisation of religion in various political conflicts and asked leaders of the European religious communities to condemn attacks against Christian denominations.

The resolution also calls the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs to work out a strategy to enforce the human right to freedom of religion, including a list of measures against states who knowingly fail to protect religious denominations.

The European Parliament also stressed the importance of developing an open and regular dialogue with religious denominations as all EU institutes are due to maintain it according to Article 17 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union. The resolution also speaks for the support of all initiatives taken to promote the dialogue and mutual respect among religious communities.

Just another example of the EU being a Christian Club.

Cyprus is mentioned in relation to the destruction of the churches, stolen religious antiquities and the way the Turkish army turfs out GCs from having religious services, as they did recently.

It's not about religion or a "Christian Club" - but something the Turks seam unable to grasp - Freedom and tolerance towards individual preferences to practice a faith!

Accession at the moment is more important than membership for the continuing Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and entrepreneur investments into Turkey to help with economic growth as we are witnessing. This gives confidence for investments into Turkey that if and when it joins the EU it can open up the entire economy and take over the single market.

However if negotiations stall or either party walks away from the negotiation table foreign investment slows down and the government reacts with further protectionism. But we must also not forget the EU accounts for very high FDI into Turkey. So both EU and Turkey are interconnected than just a simple yes or no entry.

Besides the politics its $$$$$ that drives Turkey and EU to keep the accession talks open. Emerging markets (Turkey) always attract FDI as the currency is likely to rise.

Something to think about when accession talks began again in 2005 it was pressure from European Roundtable of Industrialists and BusinessEurope made recommendations to open Turkey EU accession talks.

That is why if this trend continues the EU will need to make a choice for a stronger union and globalization of it's currency for the future or keep doing what it is doing and growth of the union will slow in its aging population and economic crisis of many EU countries.

If we turn the clock back 10 years Turkey in meltdown and EU powerful even thinking of accession talks with Turkey would be a laughing matter. The world continues to change.

Please also understand I am not suggesting Turkey is the bail out of the EU but it is certainly ranks itself much higher than Estonia.
