Newbie to CyProb: clarification required.

Postby Liberty » Fri Jan 21, 2011 8:39 pm

Hi all CFers

I thought I was beginning to understand the Cyprus Problem. Today, I read this by Mr Denktash (younger) -

"The Greek side attempted to occupy the entire territory of Cyprus in 1974, but the Turkish side did not reconcile with it and had to interfere. After the agreement signed in 1976, the Turkish Cypriots living in the south migrated to the north, and the Greeks living in the north migrated to the south. We had not occupied the northern territories. The only occupied thing in this island is the rights of the Turks'."

It was in news.az.

I am confused by his statement and can pin it down to two main questions.

1. Was the Greek side in enclaves prior to 1974? Meaning, they did not occupy the entire territory of Cyprus?
2. How are the "rights of the Turks" being occupied?

The Greek side was all over the island. The majority in the north just as in the south were Greeks. In 1974 the gcs including my family from Morphou were driven out by the Turkish army during the 2nd invasion in August.

The agreement in 1976, 2 years after the gcs became refugees was mostly to accommodate the enclaved gcs and tc's that remained on either side and wished to move.

The rights of turks are not being occupied, currently the seats of the tc MPs are kept empty in parliament awaiting their return. They are all given Republic of Cyprus passports so as to enjoy the travel and work benefits of the EU and receive free schooling and hospitals in the government controlled areas.

1/3 of gcs lost their homes during that invasion. And Serder denktash is a dickhead. Clear enough?

Well said. Liberty, there are many credible articles out there which cover the Cyprus problem in depth and with balance. The name Denktas should have been enough to warn you off from possibly offending people here who have suffered as a direct result of ethnic cleansing dismissed by your man as "migration".

Nearly clear enough, thanks DT. I was certain Cypriots were random over the island and the Greeks the majority everywhere. Why would he accuse GCs of wanting to take over the whole island when that was already the case? Very confusing. News to me.

Also, I didn't realise he meant especially to do with EU Parliamentary seats since Turks are not in the EU. I thought perhaps he was griping over some other points.

Not all TC's would vote for him. I care not what the Turks think.

The name of Denktas, I gather, is much respected by many TCs so we cannot ignore this dynasty. The term 'migration' brings to mind herds of wildebeest doing what comes naturally. The reason he, cleverly, chose this, no? I stumbled. The CyProb is not natural.
