VISITING U.S. CONGRESSMEN MEET WITH PAPADOPOULOS, CHRISTOFIAS
ALL NEWSPAPERS report that a ten-member U.S. delegation from the House of Representatives yesterday had separate meetings with President Papadopoulos and House President Christofias. In statements following the meeting with Christofias, Head of the delegation and Chairman of the Government Reform Committee Tom Davis expressed his condolences for the recent Helios air crash. He also expressed the delegation’s solidarity with the Cypriot people for their efforts to find a just Cyprus settlement and called on the international community to respect G/Cs’ decision to reject the Annan Plan. In a symbolic gesture, Davis presented to Papadopoulos the American flag that was flying at half mast at the US Embassy the day after the air accident. Representative Karen Maloney expressed hope that the Turkish army will withdraw from Cyprus just like the Syrian troops did from Lebanon. She also wished that all G/C refugees may be able to return to their homes and that this point will be included in the Annan Plan.
Sad, largest delegation to date, but none of the video footage or interview transcripts have been shown back in the US. The Cyprus issue has been figuratively blown away by the hurricane news.
