How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Proposal for international conference on Cyprus

Postby humanist » Tue Jan 18, 2011 10:11 pm

More delays by the TC leadership who is yet once back tracking and wasting UN time. I think Christofias should refuse the meeting based on the fact that the TC side is changing the agreed resolution steps set out and agreed upon by through previous discussions.

Proposal for international conference on Cyprus

The Turkish-Cypriot side is proposing an international conference on the Cyprus issue in an effort to reach a settlement within the next three months.
In an interview with Sunday paper 'Kathimerini', the advisor to Turkish-Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglou, Kudrer Ozersay noted, that following the Geneva tripartite meeting with Ban Ki Moon in late January and by mid-March at the latest, all international players involved in the Cyprus issue must meet and discuss certain aspects of the problem, such as guarantees.
Eroglou's advisor claimed that the two communities in Cyprus should discuss the rest of the chapters of the Cyprus issue with Greece, Turkey and Cyprus,, and attempt a give and take process, with a view to a comprehensive agreement.
He stressed that in order to have a positive results, new tactics must be applied.
Ozersay further made clear that direct guarantees are a must for the Turkish-Cypriot side.
In a seperate development, reports in two Turkish-Cypriot dailies said that Turkish-Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu is proposing separate sovereignty for the two constituent states when a settlement is achieved.
Following a report in nationalist 'Volkan', daily 'Kubris' also referred to a separate sovereignty proposal and also disclosed proposals submitted by Eroglu on the governance and power sharing chapters.
According to the paper, the Turkish-Cypriot side proposes that a reunified Cyprus has one international personality, but not a single sovereignty.
Eroglu also seems to be proposing extending guarantor power rights in order to cover the whole of the territory of both constituent states.
Another Turkish-Cypriot idea on the table, is the possibility for constituent states to reach agreements with other states, without transferring them onto the federal government.

Eroglu made a mistake when he back tracked of governance and powersharing and proposed conferderal solution for cyprus which is comletley out of the parameters of a federation.

of course .... he is a dum arse. The GC's overwhelmingly said NO to an unfair Annan Plan and they will say NO again. If the Lord in Cyprus stands by his word and the British do not support partition, the game will continue. And Britain in it's selfishness ain't about to let go of oil rights in EU territory for anyone because as always the British will look after their majesty's interests.

...there is Justice, and the Rule of Law, vp. These are not games.

furthermore, the "players" no longer are Greece and Turkey, as though they are the only guarantors, Europe it seems is excluded from Eroglu's thinking, i see no mention of Britain either. and, within the wider context of the UN, all regional partners will want to (or should) have a say...

...shortsighted, i would say of this proposal, because of the precedent it sets, inviting in the 'motherland' similar action; several 'sovereignties' within a single "personality"
