No more quiet waiting at EU’s door, Erdogan warns..

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

And let me issue another warning to those who are threatening us with the status quo...The status quo will not remain the same for long...When Turkey finally closes the door on the EU,she will start agitating for the recognition of the trnc....With Turkey's growing influence in the region I wouldnt be surprised if certain friendly nations begin recognising and trading with the trnc...Then we can all kiss goddbye to any hopes of reunification...

BBF under the UNSC resolution gives the north state that majority power to the TCs, but to achieve that as I stated in my BBF plan, the north will need to give back at least 50% of the north to become part of the south state just to try and comply with the EU Principles. So far the north does not want to return very much, even if we are to ignore what Erdogan said recently of not giving a gram of the north back.

On Turkey's security, she has proved to be trustworthy to keep her commitments, but it does not mean there shouldn't be any security provided to give the TCs the security they need. NATO force could do just that. Of course, if Turkey does not want peace in Cyprus, she would insist that only she can provide security for the TCs and for the whole island. Turkey wants to provide "security" for the whole island as per what the AP had and what Eroglu has stated recently.

There is no way in the world Turkey would ask for recognition of the north, or else, she would have done it long time ago. Sure she wants the north to have direct trade with others just to take the burden off herself economically, but to ask for recognition is when Turkey will lose any hope of having any say so in the future on the whole island as well as losing any hope of being in the EU. Besides, major players will not allow the north to become recognised. That much is agreed on, if nothing else. Turkey does not have any say so in the RoC now and she does not like it one little bit when the RoC is making deals with neighbouring countries left and right. Imagine what would happen if there was an official partition.? The RoC would kick the British out and invite another country/countries into Cyprus to base their military, like Greece and Israel for example, which is what Turkey does not want. And for the TCs, where would they end up.? They will have their RoC citizenship's revoked and kicked out of the EU as EU citizens and left to defend for themselves amongst the swamp of settlers in the north. Not a very pretty picture my friend, specially for us TCs.!

What I think is clear in this question of the EU-membership of Turkey is that it won't be decided on.. Cyprus.

Germany, France (and Austria and others) have other reasons for not wanting Turkey in the EU.
First, because of its population, which may stabilize soon, but before that will probably reach 100 million, i.e. higher than Germany, meaning decreasing power for Germany/France in the Council and in the EU Parliament.
Second, because of the still low economic standard and corruption, which may give some important advantages, but also brings the danger of emigration and means that EU will have to give much money to Turkey for improving infrastructure. Especially after having the bad experience of countries like Greece, Spain, Romania, Bulgaria, many EU-politicians wouldn't like one more country like this in the EU, and of a much bigger size.
Third, because of the rising Islamophobia in the mentioned countries. Of course the european media can make the population accept the membership of such a big muslim country if they decide so, but it will take some time.

All these have nothing to do with Cyprus. Of course, in case Germany and France decide they want Turkey in the EU, Turkey will need to make the necessary concessions in the Cyprus question, and she will most probably do them (what happened in 2004 is already a strong indication of that). Turkish elites know they need EU, no matter what they say.

But in the meantime, as long as France/Germany are like they are today, both them and Turkey can live well with some privileged partnership, which will mean that they can have some of the advantages of a membership, without having many of its obligations. Anyway, it's not as if Merkel and Sarkozy have a problem with Turkey controlling North Cyprus.

A visit to be remembered: Angela Merkel in Cyprus

http://www.cyprus-mail.com/germany/visi ... s/20110123

JUDGED by its symbolic importance and results, the visit of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel to Cyprus was not only historic, but also a resounding success. It took place at a critical juncture of the Cyprus problem, just before the Christofias-Eroglu meeting with the UN Secretary-General in Geneva and just after the recent Papandreou-Erdogan encounter in Erzerum, with its contradictory messages as a result of the on-going conflict between the deep state and the islamists of Erdogan’s AKP.

The repercussions of her visit were felt on three levels – the local, the regional and the international. Within the local framework, when a big country like Germany, of a great international, political and economic calibre, meets small Cyprus not only are bilateral relations strengthened, but also the authority and sovereignty of the Republic. This visit at the highest level also shows Germany’s increased interest in the Cyprus problem and the island’s division, since Germany itself bitterly experienced division for many years. As the German Ambassador to Cyprus, Dr Gottfried Zeitz put it: “from the bottom of our hearts, we strongly support all endeavours in this country to come to a good solution and overcome this intolerable division of the country”. In actual fact Chancellor Merkel clearly stated that she greatly appreciates the courage, creativity and initiative shown by President Christofias to solve the Cyprus problem and that the many steps taken by him have not been matched by the Turkish side. She recognised the president’s readiness to compromise and offered her support to his chosen path. In this respect, she pledged to use her contacts with Turkish officials to promote Christofias’ efforts for a solution.

The meeting with the president of opposition party DISY, Nicos Anastasiades, sent its own message. In the first place, it attached due importance to the positions of the opposition concerning the Cyprus problem. They were explained in detail, with emphasis on the role expected to be played by the EU. Secondly, the meeting expressed the close cooperation which exists between Merkel’s Christian Democrats and DISY within the framework of the European Popular Party, which consistently supports the positions of our side.

On a regional level, Turkey-EU relations in connection with the Cyprus problem were touched upon, giving our national issue a European dimension as well. The non-compliance of Turkey with the provisions of the Protocol of Ankara prompted Merkel to refer to the obstacles to Turkey’s EU accession path and to the fact that no chapter has been closed so far. Germany, however, is in favour of the continuation of Turkey’s negotiations, irrespective of the form the accession process will take. Being open-ended, this process might in the end result in a privileged relationship, since Berlin is not ready to accept discounts in this respect. Merkel’s reference to the good cooperation between Germany and Cyprus at the European level considerably strengthens Cyprus’ hand within the EU and at the same time proves, as Ambassador Zeitz mentioned in his press conference, that the inclusion of Cyprus in the EU was no mistake. Concerning the cooperation between NATO and the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy, which is hampered by Turkey’s refusal to allow the EU in NATO meetings because of Cyprus, Merkel said that Germany wanted to help strengthen this cooperation but stressed that to untangle this issue, the Cyprus problem must be resolved.

Finally, within the international framework, the meeting with the UN special adviser Alexander Downer and UN Special representative Liza Buttenheim places the Cyprus problem on its natural level and at the same time acquires particular importance, since Germany is for the next two years non-permanent member of the UN Security Council and rightfully aspires to become one day a permanent member of this executive organ of the UN. Guided by the two UN officials, Merkel got the chance to see the divided capital from the rooftop of the Ledra Palace Hotel and could sense the physicality of partition, as no other leader has done so far.

The visit was successful beyond expectations for Cyprus and its Government, and its importance is measured by the size of the Turkish reactions. It has also projected Chancellor Merkel as a towering figure, which defends universal principles with courage, confirming in this way the protagonistic role of her country in world affairs.

Its gotten us International support, credibility, and an understanding of the barbarians you are and that we GCs have to deal with.

When the walls come crashing down on you, it won't be us the finger is pointing at which improves our longer term prospects.

You think it all comes down to the end of a gun, who could blame you, you are a barbarian after all, there are many ways to skin that cat.

So in you own words, read and weep. Plonker.

seriously Birk what can the trnc offer the EU. The trnc will never receive EU membership because of its racist stance against GC citizens and giving them fair and equal rights as any other EU State. You can't have an EU State that discriminates against one particular group of the population. If the trnc want to join the EU even as a State in its own right they will have to allow GC's to settle there as they would any other EU citizen. Which could possibly lead to a State of majority GC's anyway.

how would u know that, unless ur an airhostess on lufthansa? which ur not cos ur too ugly, too turkish and too lacking in social skills.

wot solution? the removal of interfering turkey and her lackeys from the island, for ever, is the solution. anything less will continue the problem. failing this, the containment of turkey and her lackeys in an unrecognised, isolated northern latrine is the best alternative.

Viewpoint wrote:Does this remove one settler, return one inch of land or send the TA army home...no no no,

one settler, one inch and one soldier isn't enough and isn't a solution.

life's shit, sure, but at least free cypriots can get on with it - in their free part of the island, without interference from turkey. unlike u idiots.
