How the young view sharing an island
THE AGE-OLD subject of the Cyprus problem is being approached in a novel way through a documentary by a young Cypriot film-maker, who’s calling on all politically conscious youth to take part in the independent film production to “share their views on Cyprus”.
“The documentary is about the process of reconciliation seen through the youth [of Cyprus],” said 27-year-old Danae Stylianou.
During the hour long feature film, a group of Turkish and Greek Cypriots embark on a four-day journey of discovery where they will visit places of “historical, religious and cultural significance” to both communities.
The selected participants - aged between 20 and 30 - will not only have the chance to take part in a culturally significant film but they will also be provided with free accommodation, food and transportation.
The ‘casting call’ message that went out on Facebook just last Monday has already received interest from a substantial amount of people, she said, but there is room for more.
Stylianou has no plans to target youth groups of political parties for fear of having the set views of particular parties promoted.
This “very Cypriot project” is particularly timely, Stylianou says because she feels that Cyprus is in the “red” in terms of reaching a solution.
“Now is the time for action, now we’re past the red deadline,” she said.
Another factor is the need to give the young a platform from which to speak. “We want a young person seeing the film to be able to identify with it, as we are talking about the present,” said Stylianou.
She explained how it is all very well to have the older generation always reminiscing about the good relations between the two communities in the past, but the present situation is of the greatest significance. “The idea is to motivate people in the area of politics,” explained Stylianou, mentioning how it is important for young people to form their own ideas and not just take at face value the information provided to them via the media or even through their families.
The project is partly funded by the Cyprus Network for youth Development, as well as private sponsorships.
The documentary will be in three languages: English, Turkish and Greek. “The discussions will be in English but the interviews with the participants will be in Turkish and Greek,” said Stylianou.
The journey will not only consist of visiting various sites of the island, but also discussions on the future of the island. “We plan to ask them how they would imagine themselves in a united Cyprus and about their perception of history,” Stylianou explained, adding this will show how history is presented in very differing ways to both communities.
The cast selection will begin taking place in the last week of January in all the big towns and will involve inviting the prospective candidates to tell them about the project and what to expect, then to interview them. “We want to see if they’re interesting personalities and to see what they’re passionate about,” said Stylianou.
The small crew will start filming some time in spring with a view to finishing by the end of spring. A small crew is preferable, she says, as the team wants the participants to be as spontaneous as possible, which would not work as well with a big crew.
Stylianou has already completed a few documentaries including one aptly named Ankara Street, after the road in Limassol, which tackled the history of the street along with issues such as the exchange of population and properties. She hopes to promote the documentary, once it has been completed, at film festivals in Cyprus and abroad.
The colourful promotion poster for the film was inspired by Stylianou’s need to convey the meaning that “it will be a casual trip”. “It’s a casual car, friendly, colourful,” she said, adding that the whole image of the poster, including the landscape, is representative of Cyprus.
