One caveat before moving on. Words are very important, especially when talking about Cyprus. If I use the word “invasion” to describe the events of July and August 1974, Greeks are happy and Turks are not. The opposite is true if I use the word “intervention.” Other words and phrases that will upset one side or the other include: President Denktash instead of Mr. Denkash, occupation, “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus,” pseudo-state, Gray Wolves, EOKA, taksim, enosis, illegal settlers, south Cyprus, legitimate government, and the list goes on
