Greece: Wall to be built along Turkish border

Greece to build wall on EU-Turkey border
The fence may become a symbol of EU antipathy towards Turkey
-------
(Abstract)
EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - The Greek government plans to build a wall along its 206-km-long land border with Turkey to help keep out unwanted migrants on the model of the US border with Mexico.

Greek junior minister for citizen protection, Christos Papoutsis, a former EU commissioner for energy, made the announcement in an interview with the Athens News Agency on Friday (31 December), saying: "Co-operation with other EU states is going well. Now we plan to construct a fence to deal with illegal migration."

"The Greek society has reached its limits in taking in illegal immigrants ... We are absolutely determined on this issue. Additionally, we want to provide a decisive blow against the migrant smuggling rings that trade in people and their hopes for a better life," he added.

Mr Papoutsis compared the planned construction to the 1,050-km-long fence running through sections of Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas on the Mexico-US border.

It is a necessary action....we do not want more illegal immigrants in the country, for which we can not cater. Thousands of immigrants were passing into Greece and by the previous rate at which they were coming, we would have seen 14 million people in Greece by 2015, 4 million of which are immigrants....

Completely unsustainable and damaging to the entire country.....this wall should have been built sooner.

That's the problem with (wrongly) placing this in General Chat!

BTW ... It was already posted as a topic a few days ago in the right section (Politics and Elections).

Perhaps you could PM Admin to move it.

Now tell me why the Turkish Quarter of Larnaca was kept like that, if not to show outsiders how the Turks lived pre-1974. And ofcourse you kept your refugees there too just to keep them in squalor.

You will not wind me up Oracle.
