Interesting series about the Med. According to the trailer deserted Nicosia Airport will feature in one episode, I hope they show Varosha as well.

Apparently the Turks of Smyrna entertain themselves by watching camel wrestling. :D

I watched the first episode on tv last night, It's a bit like 'Whicker's World' of many years ago, entertaining but shallow.

Not sure about the camel wrestling though, I would think that an afternoon spent watching drivers trying to park in marked bays in an Orphanides car park would be more exciting

Just watched this program which I recorded. What a historical city Istanbul is turning out to be. All those ships unearthed in the old Byzantine port; and all because of the new tunnel project. I am not surprised that the history of Byzantium goes even further back than previously thought(did they say another 4000 years?
I laughes when Trevor tried to touch a piece of shard and was preneted. Ten seconds prior to that they shoed a worker shovelling them in a collection box. What a world of contrasts. I love Istanbul and its history even more now - even with its contradictions.

I had to chuckle when I saw that even after 500 years the Byzantines are causing the Turks problems. The tunnel they are trying to build under the Bosphorous has been delayed by 7 years because of the ancient sites they have unearthed.

Hey Deniz, do you fancy a week on the Christina O? :D

Nah, it looks dated (sour grapes?)

In Istanbul every stone upturned tells a story. What a city. It indeed rivalled Rome or even better.

don't worry...

The modern Turkish name İstanbul (pronounced [isˈtanbuɫ]) is attested (in a range of variants) since the 10th century, at first in Armenian and Arabic and then in Turkish sources. It derives from the Greek phrase "εις την Πόλιν" or "στην Πόλη" [istimbolin], both meaning "in the city" or "to the city"

No need to play their games. Before the official use of the name ISTANBUL, they used the word Konstaniniyye/the city of Konstantine in Turkish. I always found that name romantic. Their coins (and Cyprus currency) in the 19th Century, state that they were made in 'darbhane-i Konstantiniyye'/ Istanbul mint. Has a nice flavour doesnt it?
