fascinating, insightful (and rather sad) article from the guardian, from 1954, about cypriots who emigrated to london.

watch out cyprus, we'll all be back any day now....

It wasn't all sad, there used to be the Sunday Greek films shown at the Palace Theatre in Cambridge Circus, Charing Cross Road, the flea pit in between Turnpike Lane and Wood Green where we used to go to see films with Xanthopoulos, Kourkoulos and one rather rude film quite surprised us all with George Foundas in Troumba 67, Our Auntie Apostolou clapped a hand over her grand-daughter's eyes much to the amusement of the rest of us, and vowed to have a go at her daughter for sending the poor girl along for a 'treat'.

Interesting article, brings back the memories. Annaka, do you remember the ODEON, in Holloway road? That played Greek films on Saturday nights, I think.

Yes, we did visit the Odeon in Holloway Road, but after 1974 and I can remember standing in the queue and my husband, looking at all the families and saying he didn't recognise any of them and that they were probably fresh refugees from Cyprus.

My husband left Cyprus in 1952, aged 17, and worked in Drummond Street (off Tottenham Court Road) before having to do UK National Service for two years. We met, married, have two children, became grandparents and arrived permanently in Cyprus in 1994.

My husband's first cousin was in the bus in Tottenham Court Road that was hit by a German bomb during the war, so sadly he didn't make it back home.

Regards,

Annaka
