The original German version, popular with both Axis and Allied forces in the Med through broadcasts from Occupied Belgarde was sung by Lale Andersen - she recorded it in 1938 and after being banned by the Nazis, from singing re-recorded on Goebbel's orders it in 1942.
Marlene Deitrich recorded the song in 1944 for the American OSS as part of a Morale sapping propaganda campaign aimed against the German Forces.
