Turkey seeks response to Greek Cyprus hooliganism

Turkey is readying to use legal and political channels to respond to attacks against Turkish basketball players during a match in Greek Cyprus. 'Our first priority was to ensure the players' safe return after the attack. That was done and the next step will be to bring the issue onto the international agenda,' a diplomatic source says

Turkey will pursue legal channels by sending a letter of complaint to the world basketball governing body, while the government presses the United Nations and the European Union to take action. Ankara holds the U.N. Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus responsible for not taking sufficient security measures.

“We will, of course, complain to the United Nations both in Nicosia and New York because while our team’s initiative to play the match in Greek Cyprus was a [friendly] gesture, our players’ safety was not ensured,” the diplomatic source said. “Because Greek Cyprus is a member of the European Union we will also take initiative at the EU level.”

“The Greek Cypriot squad played in a previous match in İzmir, where they were warmly welcomed without encountering any incident. Turkish authorities did not even feel the need to take any extra security measures,”

“Our players thought they would be treated the same and in return decided to play the match in Greek Cyprus but what was expected did not happen,” the source added.

In Istanbul, Davutoğlu said Thursday that necessary security measures were not taken. “This is not an excusable situation, and we will keep track of the issue,” he told a group of journalists in Istanbul’s Çırağan Palace, where he was attending the 11th summit of the Economic Cooperation Organization.

The Turkish foreign minister also said statements of apology made by Greek Cypriot authorities immediately after the attack were not sufficient, and emphasized that brotherhood and peace must prevail in sports events.

In initial remarks, Greek Cypriot President Dimitris Christofias slammed those involved in the assault as “brainless,” saying their actions harmed the interests of the Greek Cypriot side.

“This has caused big problems for the Republic of Cyprus because this gives great fuel to Turkish propaganda,” he was quoted as saying.

Ofcourse Christofias saying truth in here but what i see in the forum most of the GC's are still finding lots of excuses by attacking to players are very simple and basic hooliganism....which is not ..... where were the state police?

have a look what paper says again''“The Greek Cypriot squad played in a previous match in İzmir, where they were warmly welcomed without encountering any incident. Turkish authorities did not even feel the need to take any extra security measures,”

than where is the ''ROC'' authorities ? They gave this chance to hand of the fanatics.... to show us '' are u going to live together with these people ?'' when u see, hear often TC's plated cars often attacked in so called free areas of Cyprus as a individual too many question marks comes on your mind.... am i going to be their next target ?

to build up trust between both side up to now ''ROC'' authorities always failed.

We cannot all be as talented as the tc dept of trust building. This years brainwave was not to allow Christmas mass for the enclaved GCs.

The "trnc" authorities are not a force for any nation in this world to feel the need to imitate.

I wonder if Cyprus had more than a third of Turkey under unlawful occupation whether these Greek Cypriot players would then have been warmly welcomed in Izmir!

Perhaps next time Turkey will vote to increase the UN peace keepers in Cyprus than voting to deny them being in Cyprus altogether.!

Isn't that interesting. Israel kills 9 Turks on a flotilla boat heading to Palestine and all Turkey asked from Israel was an apology and a compensation to their families of the dead, but in Cyprus, the apology made by the RoC was not enough, specially when no one got killed or even being injured.!

what are your excuses for raping little 13 yr old girls and killing people in front of their families coming to cyprus thinking you can just take it with out a fight?

the pathetic excuses is turkey and your fake rape state that gives them......

what happens when at each apoel-omonoia match the gcs beat each other up or even the apwllon-apoel they still the fans beat each other up..

its only turkey that would call this violence against turks and turn it into something that it is not then you turks go do the same thing and for you to do it then thats ok....lying hypocrites all of you turks

and you think two states in the answer to all the violence that is for gcs and is for tcs the hate between both sides.. no wait two states is not enough for you! you want MORE power bbf you want now...

if bbf where to happen how many gcs do you think will cross and beat up even more tcs then ever before.. or even the ones that dare cross to the south... bbf/ two states in not the answer...

you turks wont be happy until we rename the world turkey and every one speaks turkish you go to lands steal threaten blackmail and then condem other countries doing much less then you people already do yourselves...

naughty, naughty cypriot authorities. why didn't u apologise sufficiently? i do apologise that the apology wasn't sufficiently apologetic.

as the turkish foreign minister's such an expert in what constitutes a sufficient apology, why doesn't he demonstrate by apologising for all the crimes against humanity committed in cyprus... not by his country's hooligans, but by his country's armed forces?
