Foreign Minister Hüseyin Özgürgün has called on the Greek Cypriot Administration which signed an agreement with Israel outlining its exclusive economic zone to exercise common sense. He said such unilateral initiatives could create serious problems by raising tensions in the region.
The TRNC Foreign Özgürgün responded to the signing of an agreement between Israel and the Greek Cypriot Administration on the exclusive economic zone in the Eastern Mediterranean, in an interview to the Anatolian News Agency.
“Taking such initiatives without Turkey’s approval only serves to heighten tensions in the region” he said. The Foreign Minister also reminded the fact that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and its people had an equal say and equal rights over the island’s natural resources.
He said that any agreements on natural resources that are located within the sovereign territory of the TRNC are only valid if approved and signed by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
Noting that Turkey also has the right of say as well as other legitimate rights on the areas in question, Özgürgün stated that such unilateral initiatives by the Greek Cypriot Side revealed its true intentions towards the Cyprus negotiations process.
