Interesting clip. You learn something every day. I had not realised that there were two Christian churches built inside the Parthenon prior to the mosque. The bloody Venetians have a lot to answer for. Barbarians. :?

Apart from the ravages of time; the greatest singular damage was caused by the Turks using it as a munitions store and then "selling" the friezes, statues and caryatids to Elgin!

Dear Oracle, you look but do not see. The two churches built did not appear from the heavens (as depicted in some icons) but Parthenon material was used. You really did love the Venetians did you not. You will not blame them for anything. The clip you admired depicts them blowing the place to pieces. As stated in the thread, the authorities DID NOT sell the stones, but you would cling to straws.

Besides The marbles should be returned to the Acropolis.

Deniz, the churches were built with minimal destruction (otherwise the columns would have been removed entirely plus the "Elgin Marbles") and maximum recycling of available materials to maintain the site as a religious centre where the spiritual continuance of worshipping the ancient gods morphed into the present orthodox-catholic followings. It was in keeping with its original role and certainly respected the Parthenon's right to exist in situ.

Contrast that with the Turks' deliberate and sacrilegious misuse as an ammunition store where it was a prime target, and the later "selling" of the main artifacts, which were untouched by others for 2,000 years - and any honest person would admit the Turks were the ultimate, singular destroyers.

Exactly. That's why the Turks were to blame for that destruction; because they deliberately kept their weapons/ammunition in the Parthenon! The Venetians were fighting a war they couldn't afford to lose. The disrespectful cowards and wanton singular destroyers were the Turks who used the Parthenon as a SHIELD! And later, also gave Elgin his greatest excuse for saying they were not respected in Athens.

Now, stop showing us how desperately you try and hide your nasty ways!
