Scramble to limit political damage

THE government yesterday scrambled to launch a damage limitation exercise following the violence against a Turkish basketball team by a faction of APOEL hooligans, which has handed Turkey the PR coup of the year.

Government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou said that on the instructions of President Demetris Christofias letters were being sent to the United Nations and the European Union in a bid to put things into perspective and to give the whole story.

The incident, which took place on Tuesday night after the end of a FIBA Eurochallenge game between APOEL and Pinar Karsiyaka, was also condemned by all political parties yesterday.

What use is that if the people the parties represent don't condemn it too?

More racist graffiti in the town centre today. Now offering huge sums of money to kill Turks and proclaiming Cyprus is 100% Greek.

Just confirms what we have been claiming all along we cannot live mixed together with GCs its an explosive situation and very dangerous for both communities. The Turkish team tried to reach the safety of the TRNC but were stopped by the GCs as it would have shown they clearly could not provide security with 5 soulavaki eating policemen.

I am not sure why a Cypriot team accepted to play with a Turkish team on OUR lands given their government violates OUR human rights.

Very simple humanist. Every time the Turks arrive in Larnaca in an official capacity arranged by their govt sports body they recognise the Republic of Cyprus. Every time their teams stand to attention to the flag and anthem of Cyprus before the game they recognise the govt and state of Cyprus.

Every time our teams go over and the Turks are forced to have the Cyprus flag flying in Turkish stadiums they recognise the State of Cyprus. If they don't they'll be banned from international sports.

Actually the reverse. If the south shitriot does not play, they lose automatically so they have to play. It was only a formality game anyway. Play or not, south shitrus team is out.
