Petrol prices....catching up slowly with the UK ??

Postby dodo » Fri Dec 17, 2010 2:40 pm

It seems that the price of gas in Cyprus is rising fast. When I first came here around two years ago it was around ~0.8 Eur/liter. Now, just two years later it's 1.15. That's a 43.7% increase

Now if we look at a chart of the crude oil prices, besides the spike in the summer of 2008 when it went sky-high - 145$/barrel it's been quite stable in the last year, around 80-85$/barrel yet in Cyprus it seems there's no correlation between the price of the raw material (crude) and the refined product that we fill at the gas stations.

If we look at the average earnings here in Cyprus and compare it with the UK, it's easy to see how petrol prices are much more of a burden here, especially when public transport is out of the question.

Am I wrong to assume that the bulk of these price rises have went straight to the fattened wallets of those running the industry here in Cyprus ? Even the government seems to have failed to take them on since they laughed in their face with the weak price-cap attempt.

I wouldn't be surprised if in the next year or so the prices will hit Greece levels or maybe even higher...the sky is the limit

Later edit: I only realized now I posted wrong in the classifieds sections. I'm kindly asking the admin/moderator to move this topic to a more appropriate location.
Thank you

In the UK, only about 25% of the cost of petrol and diesel at the pumps is effected by the cost of crude oil. The other increases on the remaining 75% are due to taxes and profit.

I was in the Uk for a couple of days last week and perol was around £1.22, say €1.40, so a little way to go to reach UK prices, but I see the Government has yet to decide if it will reduce the tax on heating fuel, as it has done for the last two years. Some people must be finding things very tough, now.

Yes, agreed, Cyprus is one of the cheapest in EU....but you're missing the point. Show me another one of those countries listed that has a ~45% increase in less than 2 years...

Well, I'd say that the point could just as well be that someone used to be very lucky, yet isn't just as lucky anymore.

You should direct your complaint to the Anglo-American invasions and occupations of Arab/Muslims countries, who have consumed and wasted more oil than all the world’s cars combined in the last 100 years!

The price in italy is 1.456 €/liter
there's no need to involve any invasion, OPEC rule petrol prices.
